picked up another thirdgen bird

picked up an 86' firebird the other day for about 1k$ the frot end body pannels are toast and the paint has had its day, but the rest of the car is in great shape and a 5 speed to boot!!!
now for the intersting part, i got the car home and started checking every thing, tps was a tad off, no biggie, changed the dist. cap and roater, (not finised with the tune up yet) checked the timeing it was set to 20* BTC, reset it to 10*, and yes i unhooked the spark timeing... now that ive done that little bit, its not running near as well as it was before.. what gives?????
i did every thing that your supposed to do and set it all right so why is it acting weird now??

im gonna finish the tune up and check my haynes manuel to see it the timeing is diff for a 5 speed manuel but if any body happens to know by all means post it please...

I have my timing set to 12 degrees. 10 is what it should be. 20 it shouldn't be running well at all. Something is definitly not right.

could it be that i was looking at the little scale the wrong way, this is only the 2nd time ive done the timeing on one of these cars, but could it be 20 after?? or hows this, i'll break it down in away that even i could understand.... the little tick mark was pointed twards the passenger side when i first timed it, 20 on the scale, as i chaged the timeing that tick mark was pointing more twards the driver side, between 8 and 12 on the scale... did i do it right?? im not tring to be a jerk, im just explaining what i did the best way i know how...

If it runs good at what "you" think is 20, then put it back there.

If it runs good.

its not that it doesnt run good now, it just dosent seem to have the same pep that she had yesterday or even this morning before i did any thing to her, either way i had planned on setting it back if the full tune up didnt seem to make a diff..

not to sound stupid but try disconnecting the battery to erase the computer's memory and do a good drive with stop and go and high speed driving. this may help.
