The Lower Air Deflector Revisited
Hey folks,
I've got some info for y'all about the front air deflector on a 2.8V6 'Bird.
Like all of us, I was WAY tired of scraping it on curbs, entrances, exits, speed bumps, road imperfections, pebbles, YIKES that thing was low. Finally, last summer, I said THE HELL WITH IT: I took it off--center piece and side "wings."
I consulted y'all here first, and, reading the posts the consensus seemed to be that I was flirting with overheating disaster. But I've got to report that over the past year or so without it, I've noticed _no_ difference--not even stuck idling in Chicago traffic on a 102-degree July afternoon after a brisk road trip. The temp guage never crosses 195 or so, and the car continues to run like a champ.
I haven't done anything else special--mine's just a well-cared-for '89 V6 with 103k.
So: I'd say you can free yourselves from that damn thing once and for all. Just thought I'd pass along the good experience.
Oh, and--I love this board!

WoW is all I have to say!
I live in Tucson and my car is a 89 V-6 with 77k miles on her, and before I lost the side parts my car would run at 190ish with it being 100 outside
After I lost the side wings on mycar now it tends to wonder up to the 220-225 range in Tucson stop and go traffic@100 outside.
I am not very worried about the side flaps I lost as long as it dont kick up over the 225ish mark.

i smashed mine off when i hit a traffic pole. no problems been driving for a year after it.
v6's have no probs running without them because they dont get as hot as the v8s do without it

Um.. Left mine off, by accident, and managed to sit @ 200 constantly. Especially when driving on the highway!
Put it back on, no problems. Also wired up the fan with a 'manual override'

when i bought my car (oct 02), i had no problems with that piece missing. come may/june, it would not want to drop down to operating temp very well. put it on, BAM!!, no more problems. it may be because its a camaro, but ive always felt that things like that are there for a reason, so i leave them on, unless im modding it to work better w/ it gone somehow. it may be different for birds though.
I had to take mine off to squeeze jackstands under the lower control arms (car wasnt jack up very high, no room from the other side.) That was last november. Its still sitting next to my desk.
Haven't noticed a thing.
