1986 IROC automatic shifter ball

Hi I just purchased a 1986 IROC with an automatic trans and I have a different problem that I have not seen posted. The car has a round leather ball with the shifter button in it but the round shifter ball will not stay up on the shaft. The previous owner had put electrical tape on it to hold it up but I would like to know how to correct it the right way. Thanks for your help

Go to the dealership or possibly a autoparts store and get the "C" clip that secures the shifter **** to the shift lever. You might find one in a junkyard or at Hawks, gmpartsdirect, classic industries, or one of the other places that carry replacement parts for our cars.

The **** should only go on the shifter one way there is a tab on the **** that fits into a groove on the shifter. If that tab has been broken the **** will slide down.

Here is a picture showing the location of the staple that you need to remove from the shifter **** on your car. Granted the **** in this picture does not look like your's but trust me the staple is in the same location as shown. My car is also an 89 Iroc and this is where the staple is located at the front of the shifter.
