air box
Hey guys=i have a 92RS with a 3.1 6 banger in it. I was walking around a local junkyard the other day and saw a car with the TPI style air box that reaches over the radiator. i picked it up for 5$ and threw new filters in it- should this flow better/cooler than the can style i had befor with the little hole that it was breathing through? Its off of a 86 2.8L car- but it looks identical to the V8 iduction- am i right?

I belive that would be called a snorkle air intake. I have that in my 87 Camaro. It is better than the other kind. One thing you can do to make it flow better is to take the baffles out and drill a few holes in the bottom so more air comes through.

that was the first thing i did- i took the baffles out and cut some of the bottom out to make it more open element so the air can suck right through the filter

id just drill a couple holes in them with a 1/2 inch bit and remove the baffles in it and see how that does first before you go cutting too much

k&n's are water proof, you can wash them out with water and re-use them...
mine were cut out, completely, when i got that setup for my car and i've always run paper filters in it and never had any problems.
yes, you will feel a difference in power at higher rpms. and, yes, it is the one from a V8, someone else must have put it on the 2.8 car.

ok, i see what you're saying. i thought you meant waterproof as in, water won't mess them up or 'clog' them up. i don't know of a filter that water won't go through.

I wouldn't worry about water getting into the engine; you shouldn't be driving thru that large of a puddle anyway!
The K&N's are water-resistant b/c they're made of cotton and oil; in theory, that oil-soaked-cotton should keep any water out b/c oil and water don't mix, the water shouldn't get thru the oil.
