2.8 and CT-26 Turbo lag
I'm sure a number of you remember my gripes of turbo lag with the CT-26. Well, I went out to start the car today... wouldn't fire up. All the plugs fouled out from oil/carbon (All valve seals are toast now.. looks like they didn't respond well to boost) .... that is... all the plugs except one.
My #1 cylinder, which has been my problem child from the get-go, with the worst oil leaks, etc... yeah, sure, it was oil fouled... but there wasn't a speck of carbon to be found.. anywhere. Since I replaced the plugs, which I had to do to get the car to fire after the turbo was installed, it appears I've been running on 5 cylinders... and it's still faster than my '88... and it appears my high 15 estimate and my friends boggling over how much power it gained... we never could have imagined it was LIMPING the whole time.
So... R.I.P. little 2.8... the time and parts involved in a valve job just aren't justifiable for me... looking to acquire a 3.4 for spring.

Thicker oil? I'm already running 20w50 thanks to the turbo
Yes, the temporary fix is fresh hotter plugs.. but the truth is the motor needs a valve job. No way around it.. even before the turbo I was using every trick in the book to avoid a valve job

Mmmmm... I'm more concerned about the turbocharger than the motor. I don't want stray debris randomly managing to exit the exhaust valve and destroy the turbo... so no blaze-o-glory runs either
'bout to go change the plugs, though... we'll see what happens for now
Also, it seems the local junkyard is out of 3.4s, so I'll have some fun tracking one down now

3.4 is 9.5:1 compression
3.1 is 8.5:1 compression.
3.1 is better, and you can actually use the same block you have. Just crank n pistons is all you need.
Either way it goes, sounds likes it a pita, but may be funner in the end.

Did I not say 'local' junkyard? All of those Phoenix yards are only 3 hours away. It is nice to see they have a surplus, though.
EDIT: ooh. Tucson ones with decent prices. Score! Thanks for doing the footwork for me
Dale, I simply don't want to dig into the motor... at all.. 3.4 swaps are simple and effective, and Tiago's pumping 5 psi into stock internal 3.4 and generating 300 rwhp. I'm far more worried about my drivetrain

Yeah... santa claus is coming alright.. relatives have us tapped out
Ah well. It gives me some time to mock up the new turbo piping.. I'd like it done before the 3.4 anyway. Getting a cracked 2.8 block to toss on a stand, should have an oil pan, and have spare heads... be alot easier to do the pipe when I can turn the engine upside down instead of turning myself upside down.
Also gives me some time to get this puppy finished and ready for tuning.
