TDC Question

So if number one cylinder is at top dead center which one is at the bottom on my 3.1?? Or tell me how i can get to the number one cylinder and pull the spark plug because it seems like the egr system and alt bracket is totally in the way.

you can get to all the plugs with a wratechet extension and a flexhead without removing anything.

Trick question, none are at BDC while #1 is at TDC. #4 will be at TDC exhaust while #1 is a TDC compression. Does that help?

Passenger side front cyinder is number one
Remove the plug, plug up hole with your finger, crank over engine, await the finger to be popped off by compression and then go check the timing mark on balancer. You should be "right there" after several attemps. Get your timing mark to "zero" as that's more likely TDC.

Especially when "Hon it'll just take 5 minutes" turns into an hour! And forget about asking for help bleeding the brakes... yikes... after the first time, you'll never get help again!

I must admit my Wife isn't so bad at brake bleeding. Cranking over help is "really borderline". Get the remote starter for best help at your own time frames!

ya but theres like WAY too much stuff in the way to even get close to getting my finger in there, thats why i was asking which cylinder matches up with number one, so i can use another cylinder to get tdc.

You should be able to at least snake a piece of vacuum tube into the plug hole; when the tube stops rising, you're at TDC. (Man, I'm glad I have a 2.8 and can get to everything!) Of course you still have to make sure you get the compression stroke.

You might be able to stuff a rag (not paper towel) into the plug hole; when it blows out, you know you've got the compression stroke; then you could shove the vacuum hose in and find TDC.

ok, so why are you having so much trouble w/ TDC of number one? The most common way is to put a finger over the sparkplug hole, i've never thought things were that cramped, atleast not in my 2.8, in the 3.1 maybe the EGR components are way in the way, however, (i'm not a small guy) i can still get to any cylinder at any time, and yes, a socket/swivle/extension setup tends to work best.

see what you can find to put on the plug hole to find compression stroke, using a rag can also work, and i've heard of people using a screwdriver (what my teacher once taught us). if you use the latter, rotate it by hand, i really wouldn't want a starter spinning a screwdriver up and down in my cylinder at 300 RPM. A piece of Stirdy rope works, along w/ vacuum tubing, etc...anything that will hold it's shape.

Giving our compression strokes being 120 degrees out, it'll be a little more to determine TDC/BDC relationship that it would be on a 4 or 8 cylinder engine.

Depends upon the reason you need #1 at TDC.

Oh, OK, in this case set #4 (middle drivers side bank) to TDC (compression) and set the distributor in with the rotor pointing at #4 plug wire terminal.

Firing order being 1-2-3-4-5-6. Just count around the cap, clockwise, looking down from the top.

Get it running, disconnect the EST connector, and time it. Can put the timing light pickup on either #1 or #4. No difference (I use #4 for the same reason you are going to). Just set to 10° BTDC. Shut off engine, re-connect EST, remove timing light, then can drive car.
