need help figuring out a few parts for the 3.4

need help figuring out a few parts for the 3.4

i'm currently ordering parts, and wondering where
i could get a good set of high quality pistons

and if anyone had a link for the 1.6 crane gold rollers rockers and pushrods.

i'm having problems finding things

heres a list of what i have planned, any suggestions or tweaks would be aprreciated

1994 3.4 block bored jst enough to clean up the walls

reground crank
clevite main and rod bearings
melling mtc-5 cam
profesionally ported and polished stock heads, 3 angle valve job
brass freeze plugs
melling hi volume oil pump
cloyes double roller timing chain
crank under drive pulley
crane 1.6 full roller rockers
crane pushrods
accel 17lb injectors
afpr
mallory distributor
oil filter reloaction kit
stock oil pan
headers
new cat

still need to choose springs, and figure out a new plenum

haven't figured out which springs i should go withblock and heads go in end of september to get machined, need to get the rest of these parts ordered before then

Axle/Gears: open 3.42, posi 3.42
www.ftpp.com has some ross pistons . . . dome flat or dished, although you have to call them to get the exact specs. check there. i think they have forged pistons at like 485 grams a pop, or 560 or 580 for boost or nitrous.

i dont know for sure, but depending on how much your flowing with the heads and cam you may want 19# injectors. I know dale said recently that he found that part of the high rpm problem with our motors is the injectors, im pretty sure if you are increasing the airflow more im think you'll want 19#'s.

are you planning on keeping stock compression ratio? .

has lots of stuff for the V6s in stock. Ross does make the pistons, but be warned they are not cheap-prob in the $600 range-but they are great quality. They did the forged flattops for Shannon's 512 CID Caddy motor (using Eagle Olds rods), and they are some of the nicest pistons I have ever seen.

i'm hoping to keep compression as stock as possible, as far as injectors go, i'm holding off buying them for last, i'll figure out exactly how much air i'm flowing adn go from there, if i have to go to 19 i will.

whatevers gonna work best

i figured it owuld be around 600 for a good quality set, this motor is not something i'm willing to cut corners on, i want it to be a very stout little 3.4 that will last for a very long time

while youre calling ftpp for the ross piston specs, want to write them down and post them here?

i'll figure out exactly how much air i'm flowing adn go from there, if i have to go to 19 i will.
good plan.

im starting to put aside $ now for a total 3.4 build, although im planning on going a little more radical than you, but i also wont be dont for a lot longer than you, especially if i try to wait around for an aluminum block with 92mm bores instead of 89mm

i'll definatly get the specs off them

like i said earlier, i'm not planning on having the fastest 3.4 out there, but this motor will be a very quick little 6.

although i've started ordering parts and such, and while i'm getting the machining done, this motor will not be assembled for a while, i'm planning on doing it very well, and waiting for a few aftermarket parts to come out.

i believe this motor will also accept boost very well, my eventual plans are to turbo this, this is why i'm not going to fully assemble the motor for a bit.


hopefully someone on this board will get an intake done, and still be making the turbo kits when i have enough money to get it

i'm with you on the slow and complete build, if youre going to do it, do it 100% the first time around.

i wish i had the option of turbo in cali, but i need to make this so i can covert back to smog legal with little downtime. i figure im gonna milk all i can out of it n/a and then maybe custom fab a blowthrough s/c that i can take on and off(a helluva lot easier than replacing the exhaust, etc for a turbo) if i need more power. this will be more of a roadrace/autox car like dean's though, so i dont need v8 power.

one thing i am looking at doing is my own intake work(depending on what doward and the others come out with). think it would work to make an upper intake eintirely out of jb weld?(from a mold or cast or something). lol probably not, but it'd be sweet to have a jb weld plenum. it'd get rid of those nasty bends at least.

as said, pistons are a little more than 680 for custom forging of them..... that is where i am getting the 11.5:1 pistons for the 3.3 stroker i am building, but the difference is i am building it while in the car, and keeping down time to a minimum!!!! pulling engine once to do the bottom end. the rest will be done with the engine in the car.......

mine are custom forged pistons made for a .30 bore and 9.1 compression(in intrest of maybe turbo one day)...found the bill 680 exactly

i'm going .01 less than max, with the 11.5:1 and a race cam. should boost me up even more than what i got more. i will prolly get another set later for like 9:1 compression when i go forced induction.


long story why i am building it this way now, then turning to forced induction later!

They are a GREAT OPTION
I got from them the TRW stuff to build me a LT-1(1970)/Z-28 engine.
Great option for engine parts and yes very fair prices..
You enjoy the project!
IF YOU CAN upgrade to the "beehive" valve springs from Crane or Comp cams.
Stronger & less weight for stronger revs.
