Explain to me how to clean the IAC

I read this thread already https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=175177

But since I don't know what I'm doing most of it is confusing to me when I read it. Explain it to me like you would explain it to a 5 year old lol or to someone that has hardly turned a wrench on a car before.

I was bored so I went outside to fool around with it. I took the two screws off and took it off... When I say 'it' is that the IAC motor?? There was black stuff(carbon I'm assuming) on it(where the spring is and on the end of it) and inside the passage way where it came out of.. I took a rag and cleaned it off. I didn't wanna do too much cuz I didn't wanna screw anything up...

Also, the part with the wires are connected is that the electrical connector? Does that have to be removed before taking off the two screws? I was going to take it off but it felt like it wasn't made to come off so I just left it on and took off the screws.

What is the pintle? is that the part on the IAC at the end of the spring??

Sorry for the dumb questions!

Well I got another question...... The IAC passageway hole, that's where the IAC motor came out of right with the two screws? He said spray cleaner into the IAC passageway hole from the IAC motor's hole this way you're spraying from the top of the passageway, so gravity helps you.)... But the hole I'm talking about is sitting sideways, not on the top

The pintile is the point that sticks in that hole. Shapped like... >.. That. Yes it needs to be clean, and cleaned w/o spinning it or pressing down on it.

Yes you can spray carb cleaner into that hole. However, I wouldn't do that with the TB still on the car(personal preference).

After its all done, since you have a lovely 91 3.1 (like me!). You get to drive it around for a while, .. while the computer learns its new idle. So it will stall, rev, jerk and whatever else it feels like for a good 100 miles or so.

Dont you just love the 3.1

2.8 wont do it as much, and learns much faster. Like within the first 10-15 miles.

hmm...that's interesting. i would think that they would have made the newer models to relearn the settings on a shorter time

Mine takes 10ft to learn a new idle. It sat in the back yard for a few months with a dead bat and a dead brake booster. I finally charged the battery up. Started it, died, started, died, started, died, started in N held the gas up, put it in drive and rolled out of the back yard and it was fine. Idled like always.

Damn, I thought I did explain it enough in my post, but I never said what a pintle was! oops!

I've sprayed the "throttle body cleaner" (not carb cleaner) down the pintle's hole with the TB on the car... since the air intake hose is off, the cleaner just runs down out the front of the butterfly valve.

If you were to take the throttle body off the car, buy a new gasket! (Or use the old one as a template and cut your own out of 1/16 black gasket material and an X-acto knife) The original one will have been compressed by now, and if you re-use it, you won't get a good seal- and you'll get vacuum leaks.
