86 firebird

hey everyone!..one of my neighbors that lives acouple houses down from me has a 1986 Pontiac Firebird with a v6(135k) and it is automatic. About 8years ago the cars transmission went out and the car has been sitting there for years now and i was asking him if he wanted to sell it and he said he'd let it go for about $500-600

The engine runs and sounds good from what i can tell from seeing it idle. I checked out the interior and it is in very good condition seats, carpet and dash... the body has old paint and the driver side fender has a dent in it from being hit while parked.

what do you think the car is worth and would it be worth it for me to fix the transmission and tune the car up too a good running condition?

anyone please respond with what you think.

Adam

check for rust very good and if ya want a new trans the only ones i have found that have been rebuilt by sombody reputable run between $800 and $1000 for a stock spec rebuild. or you could probably get a Jyard trans for not much but ya never know how long a JY trans will last. id say jusmp on it i have driven my car in any weather Kansas has thrown at me an i have yet to even have a close call plus there Cool lookin and handle fairly good stock.

700R4 for an automatic or a T-5 for a stick.

But you Have to specify V6 if you buy a new one or get one out of a V6 for a JY replacement cause they have different Bellhousing patterns and input shafts. this applys to autos or manuals

Jump on it. The 2.8 V6 engines last forever!

trans

my trans went out on my 91 bird from going in drive at 55mph to reverse when the throttle stuck and it chewed the gears up But junkyard trans are cheap im getting one for $250 off a 92 bird and im getting a transgo shift kit and filter and flushing it so u can get a decent trans for about 500 if u want the performance parts in it.

why put it in reverse or park when your throttle sticks? your like the 4th person i have heard that did that on here. just put it in neutral and shut of the ign or just shut the car off and use the engine to stop. going beyond trans problems think of what puting it in park does to your rearend gears.

I said reverse OR park. I did not realise you were not intending to put it in reverse i just was sayin that mostly because of all the people that have done it on purpose. So i apologize about that i didnt mean to sound like an A$$ hole but i have personally seen the affects of puting a trans in Park with the engine idling let alone at WOT while moving.
