3.1 v6
ok i have never been been on this forum before, and i hope this doesnt get banned. i drive a car with a 3.1 ltr V6, but the car is an 87 RX-7. I was wondering if i was to take the fuel injection out and put a carb on it , if (in your opinion) it would make it a more reliable car. i know it easeier to tune, and parts are alot cheaper. That alon i would love. but would it make it more reliable,(keep in mind i have alot of time to play with the car. thanks for your opinion, please dont ban me, it is the right engine, just not the right car.

these engines make less hp when carbed mpfi is the way to go and stay
well at lest its an upgrade to the stock 13b i know my 90 rx had 0 take off power untill on the freeway and i smoke them all the time with my "v6 camaro"
but trust me the parts for these engine are pretty cheap compared to the rx-7 13b
you also may want to check out www.60degreev6.com

Wow! Price out an aftermarket intake for putting a carb on a 2.8 or 3.1... NOT CHEAP. MPFI was the best thing to ever happen to the 60* V6. The stock carb setup works but if you're already MPFI then there's no reason to mess with anything else cause it will all be a step down.

Well you see
im not really worried so much right now about power, just because its such a frankenstiened motor, plus the car not being what the engine was ment for. i thought that it would be easier to work out all the little bugs that the car has. no computer no electronic stuff to try to figure out. but ill try to get a picture or two to show you. how thw mazda a/c compressor was still used, plus the fact that only the driverside has the "air injection". absolutly mind boggling, what these guys were thinking when they did this.

bugs
well, since im new to the engine. i havnt figured out where there are areas where vacum leaks can occur. i have replace all the vacum lines that i can see. and on the back of the intake manifold there i a T-fitting of sorts, snd its loose, but when i tighten it i cant connect the hose that is supposed to go there(you can see the mix-match orange/black hose that connects to it in the picture above). that and the smog pump only connects to the air injection one one side the hose thats supposed to connect to the otherside is just open, should i remove the smog pump and plug the hole in the exhaust manifold. or do i need to plug the open hose from the smog pump. or doest it even matter. oh and im not sure how these engines normally run, but when i hit 4500 rpms the engine stops making anysort of power, and kind of "surges" (thats the best way i can describe it). if you all have any ideas i would appreciate it,. and one more thing.... im not sure but is the egr valve from a diiferent generation, of mototr or is it all the same?

well ya the power band ends at 4400 4500 after that your just pushing air
but that engine looks to be a 2.8 not a 3.1
trust me drew parts for a rotory 1.3 liter are much more expensive then a v6 carb set up
thats why so many rx-7s have blown engines lack of proper mateinace parts for them are far to much
a 3.1 v6 sells for 300 at hawks a 1.3 13b rotory tends to sell for more then a full out tpi 350
around $1500 13b na $2000 for turboII 13b everything is insanely priced

well i was told that the way the idler pulley was there that it was a 3.1, it has a 2.8 intake, along with(what ive been told by someone who looked at the engine in person) a bunch of parts that shouldnt bee there, beacuse of what engine it is.
im not going to ever put a rotory in it, ill keep this engine, and later on down the road, put another one in it.

3.1 uses a digital egr you have the old type found on 2.8s
the idler is differant then 3.1s and you have half vbelt half serpentine setup weird

out of place
the egr isnt supposed to be on there , its one of the oddities about the car, the crank pulley is different than what is supposed to be on it, hints why the idler is different. sorry if that sounded rude.

Smog Pump
ok so i want to remove the smog pump... is this something i just need to get a smaller belt, and since the air injection is only going to one side, i can remove it from the exhaust manifold and plug it up correct. this wouldnt hurt the car, just make it that much more unlikley to pass emmissions. not that it would anyways
