V-6 engine swap - questions?
My 82 camaro has the 2.8 v6 and the engine is shot. The trans is a 700-R4. I found a 4.3L V-6 that came from a 1985 caprice. I did some research and i found that the engine used the TH-400 tranny. I was wondering if the 700-R4 would bolt up to a 4.3, or will i need to find a used TH-400. Thanks for the help.

I have a 82-92 camaro repair manual from Haynes. I looked up the transmission and it says the 700-R4 wasn't used until 1984. The tranny in my 82 berlinetta is supposedly a 200C. Is that right???

Some early 90's pickups came with the 4.3 and a 3l80. 3l80 was just a new name for the 400. Just like the 700r4 became the 4l60. I don't know if it came in the caprice or not. Mike
But to confirm the answer to your question the 700r4 has two bolt patterns. One for 60*, and one for 90* engines. Yours is a 60* and the 4.3 is a 90* engine. As the 4.3 is a "two short" or a 350 with two center cylinders missing.

Why are they so bad. The only thing i have heard about them is that the 200C doesn't have a hydraulic clutch. Is there anything else?

I wouldn't exactly call them the worst trans ever considering that they were what buick was using in all of the T-types. If it can hold up to that power, its not too shabby

So, the short answer to your question is no, the trans you have right now will not just bolt up.
The reason for telling reed35 about the "two short" is so he would know if he uses the 4.3, he could use a tranny from behind a V8, but good one!

I believe the crossmembers are the same...a friend of mine converted his V6 Camaro to a V8 with a TH350. He kept the V6 tranny crossmember and used a driveshaft from a TH200C-equipped car, and everything works like factory.
If you go from a 700R4 to a three-speed, you may need a new driveshaft for length reasons. If I remember correctly, the 200C(three speed) driveshaft is longer than the 700R4 one (overdrive). I have no idea how big the TH 400 is in comparison to the TH350 or 700R4, though...
