3.1 engine noise loud like a v8

Okay this is hard to describe but I will do my best. My 3.1 normallly has a higher exhuast noise upper range just like a 6 cyl. Just recently it now sounds like a v8. Lower and a puffing noise coming out of the exhaust. A slight miss.

It actually sounds like a 305 or a 350 and some lifter noise. I pulled the plugs last night and they are clean and burning normally and replaced them slightly worn.

Check timing was 6 degrees book calls for 10 I am going to adjust tonight.

I am going to check fuel pump pressure for normaly operation. and see if any bleed down.

New or new with in the last year.

Spark plugs
wires
cap Rotor
Ignition Module
Ignition Coil
New Timing chain and two new injectors (the injectors and chain were bad)
New Cat and muffler.

Here is what I am thinking it might be.

1. Bad Cam
2. Bad lifters
3. Burnt Valves

IS they anything else that I need to look at.

And am i on the right track.

Also I can pick up a 3.1 for 200.00 would that be the way to go instead of puylling this one apart.

Do a compression check before anything else. Let us know what the numbers are...

My 90 3.1 went 248,000 and still ran great on the factory cam and lifters. I'm not saying they can't go bad, it's just not extremely common.

Re: 3.1 engine noise loud like a v8

okay here is the compresson test

1 75
2. 145
3. 150
4. 140
5. 150
6. 145

SO I guess number 1 is my culprit. I squirted oil with no improvement.

Tested fuel pressure held for over 5 minutes
tested timing adjusted to spec.
Vaccum showed no sticker valve. Go figure

Re: 3.1 engine noise loud like a v8

when you have only one cylinder down, the valve is usually the first to get the blame.

It doesn't have to be "sticky," it could be gunked up and staying open or there could be a crack in the head between the valves on that cylinder.

How many miles?

Do you have the tool to do a cylinder leak down test?
If not, you can do a cheapie test by bringing #1 up to TDC and then putting compressed air to the cylinder. Listen for where it comes out.

Does it come out the intake, exhaust, or the oil cap?

It's backyard but it starts to give you an idea. Either way, you're pulling a head...

Re: 3.1 engine noise loud like a v8

Yes that what I was thinking. I going to pick up a v6 from a 1990 for 200.00 has 80,000 miles on it. I need this car running its my daily driver. So a complete engine with just drop and goes seems the way to go.

My other car buick just craped out the trans. Work work work

WIll do the leak down test tomorrow.

A replacement is a good way to go for you, I think. The price is right and you can always build another engine on the stand while you are still driving the car.

That is definitely my preferred method.

Re: 3.1 engine noise loud like a v8

kris W

Thanks for all the help.

I am going to do the cheapie leak down test
today. Will let you know what I find.

I am picking up the motor Thursday.

I am planning to do the swap. Then tear down the bad side and repair whats bad. And keep the motor as a spare.
