Took the V6 to the strip

Well I havent found any threads with timeslips of the V6 guys but on 8-12-07 I went to island dragway in great meadows, NJ. They were having the F-body nats and was part of a meet for NJFBOA.org. This was my first time ever drag racing. Ran 2 passes. First pass I babyed it off the line and second pass I got a 16.90 @ 79.4 mph. Track air temperature was 84. Post up any of your times and what mods have been done to the car.

Far lane is me

Re: Took the V6 to the strip

I posted many moons ago. 17.1 at 74.x mph (iirc). Only mod was 1.6 rockers, and cat-back? I can't remember. Never got back to the track before I blew the motor with the turbo.

How many miles do you have on the car? I've always wondered just what ours would run (83,000 miles and runs like a champ) but never bothered taking it to the track.

how much boost were you running? and what kind of bottom end and valve train did you have (just out of curosity (SP)?

He had no boost, basically a stock motor.

none. I never got to go to the track after the turbo was installed (I blew the motor being dumb and hitting the rev limiter), but the car was much faster after the turbo. The only mods I had with the 17 pass was exhaust. I was actually a couple of tenths slower once I did the fuel mods in preperation for the turbo (running rich).

i was just wondering im a cheap high schooler and im gonna have to pay for my own gas so a t/tt setup would be cheaper, lighter, and get better gas milage, (than a V8) and i meant before you blew the motor

I did all the work myself and it still cost over a grand for materials etc.

If your just doing a turbo because thats all the money you got now i wouldnt do it just save until you can get that V8 because you spend a grand on the V6 you will be a grand farther away from getting that V8. I would think that you would get the same gas milage as a V8. an Lt1 V8 gets 16 city and 26 highway while i get 17 city with my V6 and 28 highway. so not much of a difference there. its when you have more power and you want to start laying your foot to the floor all the time. Because I know where your coming from i am in high school and I have my foot to the floor way to often.

Re: Took the V6 to the strip

last time i was at the strip my best was a 15.9, but i havent been back since i put in a cam, did some head work, intake manifold porting, and WAY better tires. although, i think ive finally hit that spot where i need a tune, because the SOTP dyno isnt as impressive as it should be anymore.

I don't have an official slip but on a section of road marked to be 1/4 mile I got up to 73-74 MPH.

Completely stock except for a home-made intake.

what i was thinking about doing was putting the turbos in the back and rigging it to where i could just change the pipe goning to the intake when i do put a v8 in but what you say makes since, plus how much fun could an insurance company have with a high school kid that has a turbo camaro, thanks

Your VIN indicates it's a V6 N/A car. Unless you have full coverage AND they ask to look under the hood (very UNcommon), they won't even know either way .

If you are on a tight budget, a V8 swap may be the way to go if you can find a good deal on both the engine and tranny (V6 tranny won't bolt to a V8), but if you know a good fabricator, the turbo can be done in a weekend. I took longer than that on mine, only because I have four kids and could barley get a couple of hours here and there to work on it. If I did it againg on another car, I'm confident it could be done in a long day (10-12hrs) at my new shop.

Is the 200r4 the same length as the 700r4?

Re: Took the V6 to the strip

Thanks for that estimate time.

I'm glad to hear my car is running at around what it should be doin. I don't know anyone else personally who owns a third gen firebird or camaro so I don't have anyone around to compare to.

Actually, I have met one person, but he was runnin' a 350...soooo there wasn't much to compare.

Re: Took the V6 to the strip

About 40K miles ago I ran a corrected 15.8, forgot what the trap speed was though. I'll see if I still have the slip somewhere around here. I now have 273,000 miles on my 2.8 and she still runs good...needs some clutch help though...something wrong with the release fork.

Can't wait to see what this beast is going to do, hopefully get some nice numbers like that N/A, then throw a turbo back on it .

Peg leg burnouts rock! But only from that side.

Seriously though, I wonder what we could pull off using factory parts- like what the F.A.S.T. guys do.

My car is a pegleg but that time both wheels were spinning. you can get an open diff to spin both wheels. Start off the burnout in a lower rpm until both wheels catch then let her rip.
