2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

Hey guys,

Im new here and new to the world of 3rd generations, so please bear with me. Ok so here's what I got goin on...

Car wants to cut out when it gets around 3500 rpm, (in all gears). Feels like its not gettin sufficient gas. i just replaced the fuel pump and sending unit 3 days ago and thought it fixed the problem. Well lastnight i was runnin around with a buddy and the check engine light came on...i think it did so after a short burnout, but it still ran fine. It went out after i shut the car off. Then today I went to town and was cruisin on the freeway at a pretty good clip (85-90). After i exited and started to go again it seemed to cut out at 3500. It runs fine up to that engine speed. Runs fine when you first start it up, its just after i have done a bit of runnin around.

Can anyone give me sum ideas?
Thanks in advance and Hello to all of you for the first time!

Ok so I got it figured out...besides replacing the EGR valve and fixing a lower intake leak, the timing was retarded 10 degrees! Got it all taken care of and now its a whole new car!

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

you know i honestly dont know. I bought this car about a month ago. It s pretty much unbadged except for the one on the hood and the "camaro" on the dash. What comes with this starship package? Since buying this car i have been on here nonestop trying to learn as much about the 3rd gens as i can. Im much more familiar with the older cars like the 1st and 2nd gens.

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

Nope, I dont have that package. That looks pretty unique though!

What I'm toying over is the possibility of puttin a Z28 cluster (in-dash tach and 145mph speedo) in mine. (the stock 85mph speedo and big fuel gauge just arent doin it for me) I found one at a local junkyard for $65. Its a fresh vehicle and doesnt even have a spec of dust.

Anyone have any performance ideas? I already have the twin ram intake. I would like to get some headers and new exhaust. And possibly a chip.

Keep in mind I'm a college student on a budget. Plus im not lookin to run 12's. Just some bang-for-your buck options.

Honestly, I think the best thing you can do to improve the feel of your car is to go and steal the following from that z-28

Springs
Front swaybar and wonderbar
rear swaybar and swaybar mounts

Pick up some new swaybar bushings

Also, change the shocks and struts. After that it will be like a whole new car. \Berlinetta's don't even come with the rear sway bar!

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

Actaully i found an 86 Z28 thats been gutted as far a drivetrain but suspensoin is all there, for $300 and it comes with a spare body!

Im new to these 3rd gens and especially V6's . I was just wondering what can be done to my 2.8. And what places i might look to to find aftermarket products for it?

And one other question, Do all have the traction bar that protects the driveshaft? Or is this a special option? I've been crawling around under there lookin at all the stuff i didnt realize came on these cars.

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

Ok, so you are all set for the suspension!

Seriously, put as much of the z-28 suspension on your car as you can. (Thr front spring may raise the fron too much). Just look for any differences you can see, and swap the parts over.

There are many things that can be done to your car. The frist would be a tune up.

I took the easy way out and got a GTA and swapped the motor, tranny, and suspension onto my car. I megasquirted the TPI, and evertyhing came together really nicely.

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

Wow that sounds like a sweet car. I do like getting 23mpg even when I lay my right foot down.(which is nearly all the time) Imagine if I drove like a "normal" person! I still believe theres no replacement for displacement though. But I cant complain about the fuel efficiency. And its pretty peppy, too.

A popular swap is just putting a 3.4 under the hood. Now you have a good start at 160HP and you can add other goodies, check the sticky at the top of the page.

Re: 2.8 cuts out around 3500 rpm

A swap is not really in my means right now. If I was to do a swap I might as well jump up 2 more cylinders and push for the 300 hp mark. I really didnt buy this car to hot rod. I bought it for reliability and economy. But, now seeing how peppy it really is, and what it could be with a few goodies, I'm quite intrigued.

My Great Uncle, Grandfather, friend, and I were trying to figure out the numbers starting out with the 135 hp it had stock, with the couple of things it has, we are guestimating it at around 170 hp. Im really only lookin to obtain low 200's right now. I think that would satisfy me for the time being. I'm thinking of doing the basics like headers and new exhaust, but after that I havent decided what or if I'm gunna do anything.
