86 2.8 problems

Ok I have a 86 2.8. My problem is that it seems to idle fine, but when you try and give it gas it sputters and backfires out of the TB. I have checked and checked the timming, and the vavles. Dont know if the injectors would cause this problem or not. Thanks for any help/.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

dizzy cap, rotor, or the dizzy itself, mine turned out to be all three runs like a champ after a 200 dollar roman dizzy.

do what i did buy the cheap parts dizzy cap, and rotor.

if that dont fix it either find your problem or go with a new dizzy.

But i can tell you i had the exact same problem it would sputter while driving and like jerk and backfire out the TB.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

also i seen your other thread, since you just put your engine back in place make sure the wires are hooked up in the correct firing order, being passenger side 135 and driver side 246 i believe check the haynes book or search the forum but im pretty sure and it goes in a round circle on the cap being the first connector on the passenger side closest to the intake manifold is #1 then go in a clockwise circle 2,3,4,5,6 and yes 2 and 4 cross there suppose to.

make sure that's all set, cuz that would cause major backfire.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

I have done that. My wires are all right. I have checked and double checked that. Thats y i was thinking it might be something with the injectors.

no, put a flat head to each one and your ear on the handle of the flat head while being carefull they should all click somewhat in sync, it's not that though, i would bet dizzy cap/rotor/dizzy itself.

injectors really wouldnt cause those signs.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

Thanks I think the cap and rotor did the job. Now I just have the code 21-22 to deal with. I think it is the TPS. Cause the RPMs will start low but want to go up. how do I know if it is bad or not. Also have a little fule leake at the cold start vavle tube. any one know how to fix that. or where i can find a oring for it.

I thought you had fixed that with a thicker O-ring?

Go to rockauto.com and put in part number 17111954.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

Ok now I have everything mostly worked out what will cause the car to start run for a sec and then die. The rpms got up to about 20-25. But it dies after it runs for a sec. Would this be from the TPS? I have timing at 10BTDC. IT will run if you are giving it a little gas but its like it is not geting enogh gas. Thanks for any help

Re: 86 2.8 problems

TPS wouldnt cause that even if it was a maladjusted TPS it wouldnt cause that, check your fuel pressure.

Re: 86 2.8 problems

If one of the injectors was leaking would that cause it? I think one maybe not sure. How is the best way to check the pressure. So more than likely it has something to do with my fuel system.? Thanks for all the help.
