Vaccuum line question
Hello,
I'm currently restaurating a 1988 Camaro V6 + T5-transmission.
Between the engine and the firewall, there's a 3-way-piece on the vaccuum line. One end is closed with a screw. I can't believe this is stock. What is supposed to be there ?

If it's the middle section of the 3-way vacuum valve, then it goes to the charcoal box in the front driver's side of the car under the hood. (It is for emission purposes.) That's why it is plugged.

That's actually not the charcoal canister. One end goes to the intake, the opposite goes to the charcoal, and the perpendicular line goes inside the wiring harness. It's to the HVAC control, I believe. I've attached pictures.

perfect timing! i was wondering what that one does!!! alright how about the black cylinder bolted on with the alternator?

Picture? Bolted between the alternator and water pump? Fancy valve breather, I believe. If so, in theory, you could gut a large portion of the vacuum line system and replace it with a simple open-air valve breather directly in the valve cover.

I have an open breather on that side also though its a filter. Are you running a PCV valve in that?

I'm fairly certain that's the valve breather. I've got one on mine. Some years don't have it, some do. I'd love to get rid of the entire bit, but as you can tell, the bar the breather sits on holds the alternator in place. You could rip that whole mess out, put in a standard open breather, and with some analyzing of the vacuum lines, cut it down tremendously.

Painted it with it all together, judging by the orange colored bolts. You've got overspray on the valve cover. It's still much better than the GM Corporate color(black), just seems like a sloppy job. I'm guilty of it too, though: masking a built short block is a major undertaking, so I put the heads on and masked them, with the result being orange colored head bolts.

yea, i was in kind of a hurry to get the engine in so i just painted it as is. i hate GM corporate colors too. I dont really care about bolts getting painted or anything i just wanted it done quick and i thought paint it now was better than no paint at all.
