3.1 headers

sorry to post such a stupid thread, but im new to the v6. always really been bbc or sbc.

anyways, are there any fbody headers available for the 3.1? im not really sure if headers made for the 2.8 would work. and has anybody actually felt a decently noticable difference when using them? thanks for your time.

Search. It's been discussed many times. They fit fine, but are not smog legal for California.

Re: 3.1 headers

Actually they are not legal anywhere there is emission testing, but a lot of people who do those dont really check/dont care. But California is just the most strict.

There's other threads too. The 2.8 Pacesetters have a CARB number, making them legal to run in even California. Am I wrong in this line of logic? The CARB number doesn't extend to the 3.1, as far as Ive read, even though it will fit fine.

There's other threads you can find about people passing sniffer just fine with headers(some passing cleaner than they did stock).

They'll fit just fine, then. What we're debating is the result of it regarding emissions testing.

Re: 3.1 headers

It won't work in states with emissions testing because IIRC you have to remove the smog pump for it to fit, and the headers don't have bungs for the A.I.R. tubes that normally go into the manifolds.

Then what in the world was the fuss about Pacesetter getting approval from CARB all about if they're not legal by design anyways?

Re: 3.1 headers

The 2.8s don't have a smog pump. They are designed for 2.8s, not 3.1s with the smog pump in mind. So they are legal for 2.8s, not 3.1s.

My 2.8 came with a smog pump. My '83 came with a smog pump. Every 2.8 I've ever seen came with one.

Re: 3.1 headers

Mine didn't have one at all, at least since I had the car. It does have a pulley where the smog pump was. I just always assumed that they didn't have one.

This makes me wonder what else has been done to my car. I have a motor from a pre 86/87 F-body.

Re: 3.1 headers

Mine had one as well. I do know that some do and some dont. when you go to the parts store and ask for a belt they will ask you if you have A/C and if you have AIR pump.
