HELP ME WITH MY 89 FIREBIRD
HELP ME WITH MY 89 FIREBIRD
I have a 89 firebird with a 2.8L
It has only 80k miles and ran great...now its getting kind of hard to start...I am pretty sure its the fuel pump or the pump relay
So my question is Where is the fuel pump and pump relay???
I know on the V6 of a 82-84 firebird its on the front of the car attached to the engine...but I am just not sure where it is for an 89...I havent checked...but someone told me it was in the back by the fuel tank
Help me out and please be specific as to where it is and what all I would need to move to get to it...and an average time to get this done would be great

Re: HELP ME WITH MY 89 FIREBIRD
Have you checked the fuel pressure yet? Should come up to 45psi and hold there when you turn the key to the run position before cranking.
Is it hard to start all the time or only when it's cold?
The pump is in the tank, so you have to drop the tank to get to it. I can't think where the relay is off the top of my head.

Re: HELP ME WITH MY 89 FIREBIRD
Fuel pressure gauges can be found an most or any auto parts store. It just screws onto a schrader valve on the fuel rail down behind the back of the plenum and before the distributor. Turn the key to run (you'll hear the fuel pump prime up), jump out and look at the gauge. It should be holding at about 45.
Somebody correct me on this next theory if I'm wrong, but what is your oil pressure reading as you're cranking it. If your oil pressure sending unit is bad or going bad, it might be taking longer to tell the ecm that the pressure is up.
Chiltons or Haynes can be found at autoparts stores also for around $15 I think. Those would have better instructions on pulling a fuel pump than I can give, as I've never done it myself.

its not hard to swap the fuel pump ..lift the back end up undo the panhard rod ..thats the bar that goes at a slant from the upper left frame to the lower axle on the right..some tanks have a removeable filler neck on the tanks need to pull it out makes it easier to drop the tank..undo the 2 straps and down come the tank..look up at the front upper part of fuel tank..there is a plug..unplug it first..then ytour lines then drop the tank

chiltons one is better than the haynes, well its good to have both!
the pump is in the fuel tank, it instructs on draining and removing the tank before you can get the assembly off, oh what fun! the relay is on the drivers side on the firewall, one of those three there check the wire colours with the haynes diagram at the back which one it is

Do some quick reading up on fuel pump brands. I've read that some are crap right out of the box, and I've also read about people using a corvette pump because it has a lot more metal parts and should last longer.
