distributer

My son and I just put in another 2.8 V6 in his Camaro. We had a rock knock so I picked up another motor. I see the distributers aren't the same as V8's as in you can only put a V8 dist in 2 ways. The right way and 180 degrees out. But on the V6 it can go in anyway you set it in there. I got the compression up on the number 1 cylinder and got the timing mark right. Started the car. I can only adjust the timing so far because the dist hits the manifold. Can I just lift the dist and move it over one or 2 notches? Or am I completely wrong with this? Car runs good but I don't have any room for timing by moving the dist. Thanks

Re: distributer

I had the same problem. At TDC, the rotor should be pointed at cylinder 1. All I did was move the gear in the motor that the dist. shaft goes down into(don't remember what it was called), and moved the dist. 1 tooth over to compensate moving the gear. Was able to time my car and not worry about it hitting anything. This is a sorry explanation on what to do I know, but perhaps someone can make it a bit more clear. If not, i'm in orlando every now and then, could let you know and see if we can get it fixed.

Re: distributer

Sounds like it would work. I'll try it. Just started the car and got oil all over the driveway and couldn't figure out why. Looked and didn't have the dist tightened down and leaked all over the place. Here is the pic of the Camaro. He got it for $900 with a rod knock. Picked up a motor for $250.

Here's mine. 87 Monte Carlo SS Aero

Sounds like you need a new o-ring on the dizzy. They normally get really hard like plastic and no longer seal, causing oil leaks at the back of the motor. Very very very common.
