I installed an IROC cluster in my 84 Camaro. The only thing I had to change was my sending units b/c I went from warning lights to guages. If you have to change sending units pay attention to your oil presure guage b/c they make a couple different types, depending on how high your guage reads (I beleive the two types are 60 & 80)
Below is a link to a tech article on how to do the swap: https://www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/gauges.shtml

There's one more thing... a v8 tachometer expects 8 pulses for an engine revolution. Your v6 will just send 6. That means your tachometer will be 25% slow. That equation is simply 1.00 - (6 divided by 8).

Good reason to install an aftermarket tach!

i put IROc gauges on my car, i have an 86' 2.8, all i had to change is the oil pressure switch to a sender, just one thing, don't get a sender for a v-6 w/gauges, get one for a 350 w/gauges, for some reason when i got the one for the 6 it buried the oil press. gauge, other than that it is a driect drop in and work, i love it, and it looks alot better than dummy lights, and no longer a gas gauge the size of ur speedo.

Tom's right!! NOBODY around here believed me when I told them that, but it's true.

My friend and I put an '89 RS 305 cluster in his '86 2.8, and I told him the tach would be off. The oil pressure was off the chart, and the tach was about 250 RPM slow at 45MPH. How did I know?? We put his car in 4th and mine in 3rd (same ratios, as I have an auto and him a 5 speed), and mine read 2250 exactly and his was 2000. Like Tom said, it expects 8 pulses and his only getting 6.

To solve the problem, throw a 6 cylinder tach in the V8 cluster, and you're good to go

Jason, thanks for the "proof"! I didn't know the V6 tach just drops in, either. Could it be replaced with, say, an Autometer in-dash one?

Honestly Tom, I'm not sure. I've never tried to put an aftermarket tach in a stock cluster. Hehe...the only time I did a tach was in my old winter beater, an '87 Skyhawk!!!! I had the only one around with an autometer voltmeter, oil prsssure and engine temp gauges

But yeah, a factory V6 tach will drop in a V8 cluster....I'm gonna add an IROC cliuster to mine, and all I gotta do is swap tachs. Whats nice is the only other gauge that will be off (oil prsssure) is part of the tach anyways!!

I am doing a swap with my firebird. Will the speedo and gas gauge read accurate? I am switching from an 85mph to 140mph.

Both SHOULD be accurate...assuming they were accurate in the 1st place!!

The best thing to do is, before you change it, have someone follow you and measure the speedometer variation between the cars. Then, pop the new speedometer in, and use the same car to measure the variation. This will tell you if, at all, the 140MPH speedometer is off of the 85MPH one.

I have a 92 RS V6 - one question about going to the 150 mph speedo - Do I need to change out any sending units or anything?

If you only change the speedometer (I don't even know if you can do that with '90-'92 clusters), no you don't have to. If you're going with an entire Z28 cluster, then you'll have to change the sending units for the temp gague and your tach...the tach won't be accurate, and neither will the integral oil pressure gague.
