I usually drive in the city traffic but still isn't it too low for 2.8 engine?
Besides my idle ( usual staff, not stable ), I have no problem with the car, no codes, no power loss. Just a bad gas milage. Any ideas?

I've heard of this problem before... Maybe you're mistaken and have a 383 stroker that idles at 3500 RPM?

You all do have the same 15.5 gallon gas tank that I do don't you? A couple weeks ago I drove 290 miles on a tank and it only took 13 gallons to fill it up. I figure I can get 340 out of a tank of gas.

Engine: LH0 3.1L
i think that's normal. i only work 2 miles from my house so a normal day for me will be 9 miles driven with the engine never fully warm. that seriously hurts my mileage. city driving for me has been as low as 14.5 mpg before. BUT, on a trip to san diego i got 25 mpg on 87 ARCO gas that everybody says is watered down. i got 330 miles out of that tank . you can improve your city mileage by driving less aggressive but then it's no fun.

My 3.1L 'Bird was getting 280 miles to the tank in the city (well over 315 hwy) up until last week, when it got a bad vacuum leak. I got 215 city/hwy after fixing it, and did a massive tune-up (plug, wires, filters, pcv valve, etc.) last night. I still have to refill it to see what the new numbers will be.

My '87 2.8l gets about the same as Bandit's 3.1. I thought my gas milage was good until I drove mom's 305 RS she gets the same with a larger engine!

2.8s don't get much better mileage (if at all) when compared to a 305 TBI.

305 TBIs have to rev less to get to the same speed, and have either a 3.08 or 2.73 gear...much lower than a 3.42 2.8 rear gear.

BTW, I get 19 in town and 26 highway...not bad when you consider the EPA ratings for a 2.8/auto was 19 and 27. I use 93 Mobil though, and have a fairly light foot (at least compared to some of you guys )

i think the heavy foot plays the biggest part in mileage. i measured my "heavy foot" driving and got 14 mpg. the next week i filled up and drove with a "light foot" and got 19 mpg....exactly what the epa rating was (btw this all city )

Agreed... I got better mileage on my '86 LG4 Z28, than on my '86 MPFI 2.8. Strange. With both cars perfectly in tune...

I think part of the problem is that you need to nail the 2.8 more to use the performance. An LG4 is all out of puff at 4000 - a 2.8 is just getting into its stride.

also depends on your rear end ratio, if your in OD or not, if you got a auto or a stick, how you drive your stick etc, i get about 200 give or take 10 to a full tank of 87.. then again, i also have a lead foot.. cos the mileage in my 4 banger grand am aint much better
