Good question!
I disguised mine to look exactly like the original 2.8.
For smog purposes and sleeper effect.
I've had 4 peopole look and know I swapped. They can't tell any difference.
I left lots of grease on swapped engine to disguise work, too.
I'll find out how well it'll work, next week.
I'm gonna bring it to smog guy for a preview look. Lure him into believing I didn't do a block swap.
My main motive was passage of CA smog test and NOT pay $300 for smog recertification sticker (because of engine swap).
Extras are TONS OF TORQUE

Is there at least a way to tell if it's 2.8 or 3.1 or 3.4?

The "2.8" is cast into the motor on the side. I don't remember which side though- driver's side, maybe? It's dead center of whichever side it's on, if that helps. You'll need to look at the BLOCK, not the heads/valve covers/oil pan. The VIN number is also on the engine somewhere... I'll see if I can find that info for you tonight.

Ah! Here's KED85's old message on the location of the engine's size & VIN numbers:
