They're computer chips that just plug into your ECM, there are different stages, and different places to buy them. If you have the patience to learn though, you can buy the stuff to do it yourself for the same price and can get a much better performance.

www.jetchip.com
www.fastchip.com
and there's some others, i can't think of them righ tnow tho.

Actually bub, even on a stock car, a custom burned prom can gain strong performance, and efficiency gains. (More HP & MPG) Mail Glen91L98GTA, he's THE MAN.

You V6 guys are lucky in that you use the same basic system as the L98/LB9 V8s. So what works for us, also works for you.

I am more into Speed Density, but the PROM guys are "breaking" the MAF system more.

To learn more about PROM Burning, go to this link for Traxion's article on PROM burning. You can definitely do a lot more by burning your own eprom than buying one. But if you have to buy one, go to www.fastchips.com , don't waste your money on a Hypertech, ADS, Jet or any of the "off the shelf" eproms.

I should add that the 3.1s tend to be Speed Density and 2.8s tend to be MAF. But you should always check. If you don't have MAF relay between the Throttle body and air cleaner, you have SD.
