Engine temperature gauge is pinged all the way up,how do I fix?

I have a feeling that my sender unit is not working right or grounded somehow. Where is the sensor at so I can fix it?

Does the gauge stay pegged out even if you turn the car off? If so it's probably the guage.

Mine is doing the same thing...but it is only pegged once the car is started. And i already replace the coolant temperature sensor...behind the AC.

Does this have anything to do with that possible head gasket leak of yours?

You have an open circuit somewhere. That's why it's pegged. The sensor acts as a buffer to make gauge operate properly.
CHECK YOUR WIRES TO THE SENSOR. MAYBE YOU JUST NEED NEW CONNECTION ON END!!

YOU TOO CHAD!!

The sensor is in the drivers side head, behind the a/c compressor. It has two wires going to it.

Two wires...? I thought it only had one wire. At least, my '86 did, and my friend's '89 does.

One wire is on the passenger head for the fan switch. Two wires, I believe, is the driver's side head for the actual temp gauge, cars with gauge package only.

Does this help TomP?

Temp guage sensor is on the driver side head on front corner. It has a one wire connector that slides off and on.
The fan switch is on passenger head, near fire wall.It also has a one wire connector but it snaps on and off.
It sounds to me the wire for your guage has grounded out.

The only way you can fix this is to trace the wire back to the instr cluster.Once you have traced this wire into the car,use a trouble light or a muti-tester to check if it is grounded. If the wire is fine replace the sensor. If not that then replace the guage. If it still doesn't work, then...I have no clue

Hehe, lets pull out the years and figure this out! This would be great for my "years different" info! Thanks in advance!

My '86 2.8 (with idiot lights):

Fan Switch (rear passenger head): One wire
Dash Warning Light sender (front driver's head): One wire (green)

My friend's 89 2.8 Camaro (with gauges):

Fan Switch (rear passenger head): One wire
Dash's Gauge Sensor (front driver's head): One wire

Post your years and sensors guys, lets get this cleared up! Keep in mind there are two sensors on the intake manifold, each with two wires. One's for the computer, it's the CTS, one's for the cold start injector (85-89).
