How much HP gain by removing A/C?
I've heard you gain up to 25% more power. Well,whoever the strechnuts was that owned my car before me actually took the A/C totally out. Compressor,everything. So I'm kinda pissed that I dont have A/C,but heck thats what my windows and sunroof is for.
What do you think? About 160 hp being produced by my engine now that it doesnt have to drive the A/C?

removing the AC is good for about no hosepower. all it does is remove weight. the parastatic power loss is almost nothing when the AC is not on. all he did by removing the AC was lower the value of the car. sorry it be the bearer of bad news.

well, i know a way you can use that removed AC to gain some power.
mount a supercharger in it's place, instant 25% more hp.
but i've also heard that the good thing about removing AC is you save the weight. That'll be good for the 1/4.

Hehe, I'm one of those strechnuts; my a/c is gone. That was mainly because of my accident; the hard line snapped & all my freon leaked out, but it gave me a good excuse to get rid of the damn setup. (I love heat!!)

I have to agree with all here...The power loss from the A/C being mounted is non existant. If you want to get more power from the V6 removing the A/C is NOT the way to do it. If I were you I would go find a donaor car in a junkyard and reinstall the A/C and you might get another 500 bucks when you go to sell the car.

How could taking out your AC give you that much more power?
Remember, there are always cars built that didn't have A/c to start with (ie my old 88 Firebird)...those cars are no faster than cars that have A/C.

Well when I removed th A/C from my TPI i did it properly and made new brackets, got the fire wall cover. The whole 9 yards.
Anyways there is a lot of weight in the AC system if you get the whole thing. Just removing the compressor and hoses does not save that much weight. After you get the Compresser, condenser, evaporator, coil, hoses, housing and brackets off you find out you removed almost 70lbs of crap in total. All off the very front of the car. The most important place to remove it from. This help you car at the track big time. Though will this make much of a difference when acclerating from 60-80? Nothing you will notice from behind the wheel.
Basically I felt a difference on my 350, but as with any mod the bigger engine will respond to ALL mods better. It resulted in me dropping .02 secs of my 1/4 mile time. Not too shabby for 3 hours in the junk yard hunting brackets and a Firewall cover, then spending an afternoon getting everything swapped out. All together I would say I picked up 10 hp for about $30. Though I think the time inprovement was from the combination of removing reducing weight off the front of the car(improving 60'), reducing weight in general(basic rule of thumb 100lbs = .01sec), and reducing overall drag on the motor.
I did keep all my A/C hardware if I ever wanted to put it back on, but now the car looks as though it is sold( if the bank gives the kid his loan) and he doesn't want the A/C either. I had the car for 4 years befor I took th A/C off and only used the A/C 3 times. So that helped my decision to remove it a little. Plus it needed charged.
I was happy with the results over all, and it made the car easier to work on and the engine compartment visually more appealing.

86 Trans Am 355 TPI Rebuilt 700R4 with Corvette servo, modified valve body, and a B&M Torque Converter (2000 rpm stall w/ lock up), 87 350 block bored .30 with new crank. Reworked 305 heads with 3-angle valve job. Added in the rebuild was an SLP TPI cam, BBK 58mm Throttle Body,MSD 6A, Hypertech Power Coil,MSD Wires, 1.5 Crane roller tipped rocker arms, SLP Intake Runners and Port matching in upper intake including fully ported plenum, TPIS adjustable fuel pressure regulator @ 46psi, Hooker shorty style headers w/ Thermotech heat wrapping, Custom 3” exhaust with Flowmaster muffler and chrome quad tips, Hypertech Thermomaster Computer chip, K&N open element cone filter on modified MAF per TPIS specs, removal of A/C hardware and added a 1LE firewall cover installed. Also there has been a PST front suspension kit with Hotchkis strut tower brace added.
Stereo has 2 Clairion Pro Audio dash plates, 2 Sony 6X9s, 2 Kicker 12's in a custom Carpeted box with a custom amp rack Holding 3 MTX 280 Amps, and a MTX electronic Crossover all wired with EFX cable.
Asking $4200 with all extra Parts that are needed to fix most apearance flaws. ie Complete hatch and wing from a 91 GTA

it does add HP, just not a lot. it takes drag off of your engine. its no where near 25% but it does help. its one less thing the engine has to spin. plus reducing the weight on the front end never hurts.

Well I removed my A/C and honestly I didnt feel a difference...but I didnt remove it to gain "power" I took it off just to make some more room in my engine compartment plus the A/C was bsuted so it was kinda pointless to have it on there.
