I think anyone here should be able to take a 3.4 4th gen after my 1st 3.4 experience.
A guy came in and wanted to trade his '94 3.4 auto for a GTP. I took the car around the block to check it out, and I came away very unimpressed. It was rather corse, slow and un-responsive. I would have thought that 200 ft/lbs would have given it a bit more go.
I thought maybe its because I've been driving the LT1 non-stop for a few weeks, but I jumped in the RS, and to be honest, I liked it better than the 3.4!! Not to say a 3.4 3rd gen wouldn't be better, because it would be. I guess the weightier 4th gen saps the 3.4's power a bit.
Morale of the story: Race 3.4s all you like, and have no fear!!

Now that you mention it, I did take my friends 93 3.4. He claims he didn't shift right but uhh, hello...we both had automatics. Too bad he sold the car...I'd like to beat him again and again. Butthole went and bought a 2001 Monte SS. How am I gonna beat that?

The 3.4 doesn't feel like much because it wount drop back into first gear till you come to a complete stop. so if you jump on them at 5-10 mph its like the 3.4 is coming off the line in 2nd gear.
They don't have that much more Hp as compared to a 2.8 or 3.1 so if you have any mods you should be able to beat them, plus they weigh more!

The 3.4 in my Grand Am, now there's another story...rated 170 horses! Yeah, I know the FWD 3.4 is aluminum, and the GA probably weighs less, but I just thought I'd throw that in.

Only your heads are aluminum...I think I know, I sell Pontiacs
Before I bought the '97, I was considering ordering a brand new Alero with the 3.4/AT combo...great powertrain (as you know!!). Indeed, with 10 more HP than the F body 3.4s, and the fact you weigh 300 lbs less, there is a night and day difference. The 0-60 on a GA 3.4 is 7.7 sec, while a 4th gen 3.4 auto is 9.7.
Class dismissed

Hey Jason...
Any chance I can order the GT Ram Air setup from GM for my Grand Am SE? If so, how much

You know, that's a great question!!! Honestly, I don't know. I will ask my serivce manager on Friday if he knows...
My GUESS is, I don't see why not. From what I can tell, all body panels are the same...meaning that nothing on an SE would keep you from installing a GT airbox. I looked underneath one one day, and it almost looks more like a cold air intake than anything else. The grille inserts are absent on a GT, but this does not make any difference...
Any thoughts on this??

It will fit, and you can buy anything GM makes for any car as long as you have the GM part #. Think about it, body shops get their parts from somwhere when someone wrecks a car. You can get parts the smae way.
Jason can you get a Grand Am GT 3.4 with the ram air and a 5 speed?
