I am not sure what you exactly mean.
Timing mark is to be at 10 BTDC.
I set timing by ear (how smooth the engine sounds at a certain position of the distributor). I gave up on the text book method.

Remember, it's 10 degrees advanced IN DRIVE OR NEUTRAL(5 SPEED). I remember trying to set my timing in Park the first time....stupid me.

Actually, Dan's idea has some validity to it.
Hoping he'll come back and explain more through.

I always set mine in park, too; haven't tried setting it in drive yet. I don't really want the car rolling over onto me. Dan, did you ever check timing in neutral, then drive, and see how much the difference is?

If you look at the sticker under your hood you will see this:

----------TRANSMISSION
--------MANUAL-----AUTOMATIC
TIMING--10*(N)------10*(DR)
GAP-----0.045--------0.045

TomP,

No, i never checked in neutral, but in park, timing was around 22* advanced. Then i put it in drive and it dropped to around 10.
