And Now for something completely different.....:)
And Now for something completely different.....:)
Here is some good news to spread.
You know I have this 3.4 & a new rebuilt tranny. Well, I get on the freeway and I need to pass someone. I'm doing 65MPH & I want outta the WAY!
I FLOOR IT. AND I GO ZOOOOOMMMMSPPPSPPSUTTERPPPTUTTER Dead, I'm coasting! Luckily, I make it off the freeway safely!
I mean car is dead and sounds like the engine is choking cough cough.. Then, "It's Dead! Jim".
I play turn the key (don't we all!).
I look. I know every part of this engine, I built this ride! I look for anything burnt etc.
I listen.
It's electrical.
I know it.
I have gas, LIVE!!
Along comes the Freeway tow truck.
Off the highway I go, to somewhere I've never been before. Won't ya put me in a grocery store parking lot?
No, I drop you here. Bye.
$hit.
I hear, it still won't start.
I check EVERY FUSE (if ya own this car, ya better know where the fuel pumps fuses are, too!!).
I find the schrader valve, it's got fuel. I release the pressure.
Key over, Check the valve, fuel gushes out, so I know pump is good!
WHAT LEFT?
Where's the paper clips?
JUST LIKE I THOUGHT, NO SPARK!!!
I check the cap, it looks ok.
I check NEW COIL, that's good. I check connections it's good.
I KNOW WHAT, what about the ignition modular??
DON'T ASK WHY I WAS DRIVING AROUND WITH THE OLD ONE!! But, I was.
I go to change it.
I got one phillips head, one regular. Phillips fits ONE distb Cap screw. I can't remove the other screw.
I see a guy. HE'S KIND ENOUGH TO LOAN ME A FEW SCREWDRIVERS! I score!
Cap off.
I see modular.
ONE PHILLIPS ONE NEEDED BOLT TO REMOVE!
One phillips out, one bolt to go!
NO TOOLS!
Go to the garages around the corner, maybe they'll help ya, the guy says.
I walk, not knowing anything (luckily,it's a "safe" neighborhood & daylight, I can see the weapons!-Don't laugh, in LA, this is true!). Find a Porsche mechainc.
First question?
American car, next door....
I need a metric socket or adjustable pliers/wrench (I show him the spare modular I've got & I don't know if that'll work, EITHER!!).
I give him $20 for collateral.
Go back, rip everything apart in seconds!
Slip in the "other" unknown modular, back together, decide to just tighten down one screw here & one screw there... key on & over & THE MAUI DOG'S SMILE ON ME, IT STARTS PERFECT!!!
I shut off (why work on a hot engine????).
Get inside try again, NOW DRIVE around the corner to the Porsche garage.
"Sure, you can use the other screwdrivers. This is the nut you need to get on that car? Here's the socket. NORMALLY I DON'T LET ANYONE WORK ON THEIR CARS HERE... But you go right ahead (he has his 10 year old Son with him, too)".
I also had a tube of the "grease" to go under the modular (why not use it now, like I want to do this when I get home & WHY take the chance to burn up what now works for me!!).
I also find the vacumn leak caused by the Tranny guy, try to fix that (oh why not!). 10 Minutes later, I'm done. I return the tools.
"Go wash your hands in there".
A hand shake and a smile, a thank you! I'm gone, not a bit of cash is asked FOR!
Moral of this story....
It gets better.
On the way home, I am now 10 minutes past this trial... I see a BEAUTIFUL 1940 FORD Convertible, hood up. I stop (gotta pay back those Maui DOGs!). What can I do? I just hang with the guy (he's in his 60's). "Just got this outta storage, water in the gas line!" He's draining glass fuel line filters (2!!) on his intake. Here's a blanket so your belt won't scratch the beautiful paint. This is a perfect flathead Ford V-8. A beauty! All stock. "Old gas sweats, that's why ya get water in the gas from storage". Can I follow ya, how far ya going? "Down around the corner, that'd be real nice of ya". We get onto the freeway (right by LAX), I buffer fast cars for him, but, no need to he's zipping!!
He waves, I go home.
You figure this out.
Again, to much anger lately.
Stop it, if you can, in your own part of the world. Maybe it'll go further and you'll never know.
What a concept.
I was very fortunate today.
And I get to pass this along, too.
Bye!
PS Drive around with spare ignition modulars, TOO!

OK, I have a simalar story on karma, but the other way...(lomg story)
this was about 10 yrs ago when I still had my 77 T/A. My best friend Tom and I were at the Carry out Pizza hut, and ordered 2 lage pizzas. 5 min later they say they're out, how about 4 med for the same price? $hit ya!
So, 20 min later they say the pizzas are ready. I grab a 6pak of pepsi, put it on the counter and say how much? $3.19. are you sure? yes (stifle laff, stifle laff) okay, Tom leaves the store because he can no longer keep it inside. I then procede to pay $3.19 for 4 med pizzas & a 6 pak.
On the way home Tom says "do ya think we should go back and pay for these?, she might get in trouble" I say screw it, they made enough profit today to cover it. IMEDIATELY after that BANGBANGBANGBANG, we're like WTF. I pull over, look around and nothin. Pull back on the road and BANGBANGBANGBANG. pull over again and see that one of my u-bolt straps is missing a bolt and just hanging there. So we just figure nuthin can be done till we get to the shop, so BANGBANGBANG BASWOOOSH off it flew. Tom then says " see, we shoulda gone back, now we're being punished"
So always do the right thing, even when you don't want to.

well I have quite a few stories too..
few years back dead of winter, snow ice everywhere going down the main drag of manASSas VA(around midnight) and theres a van along side the road with a younger girl looking hopelessly lost. I pull over in my '76 Camaro(now back then I had really long hair and a feirce looking beard) she looks REALLY worried now(I think she was thinking of deliverance) and I ask whats the problem. She of course has no clue she says it just stopped running.
A few minutes later come to find out its outta gas. No biggie I say, get into the trunk of the cam whip out the hose and gas can and syphon out a gallon or two, put it into her tank. Stay to make sure it starts and runs good, then go on my merry way to a much warmmer abode.
Then 2 days latter I get this phone call from a guy that says he wants to meet me. I have no clue who this guy is so I meet him at the mall parking lot. I pull up and this freakin newer model bens' is parked there and I get out and he walks over and hands me 200 bucks. I'm clueless and ask what this is for and he says you helped my little girl. Well then I at least know what its for then asked if she got home ok and he said yes, he admitted to me that she said she was scared to death when I stopped and she saw me get out, and I just laughed. Turns out this guy was a freggin lawyer in DC and was away in Ohio or some ****. I asked how he tracked me down and he said his daughter wrote down the license plate number(probly fearing the worst) I laugh and we go on with our lives.
I try to go by a code and if I see someone broken down in a bad spot(I:E; BFE) I'll see if I can help(sence I ALWAYS carry my tools in my car). I have found that that goes both ways. I have been helped a few times when I needed to go get parts and they even brought me back to the car!.
Hell today I carried some old guy and his wife some 20 miles to a air conditioned phone so they could get help. I was going the oppisite direction saw them going slow on the shoulder and I had to go 3-4 miles to the next turn off to turn around to go get them. They were more then thankful. They did not care for the music I was playing but I at least turned it down for them. And they really were'nt complaining.
Just remember if you expect to get help sometime stop and give it. It's worth it trust me.

Reminds me of the time I stopped for a guy walking down the side of a busy road. It was getting cold and the sun was going down, and I figured, "Hey, I'm not in a hurry. I can warm him up a little and help him on his way." I ended up taking him all the way to his house (which was about 20 miles out of my way. He had gotten in an argument with his wife, she stopped the van in the middle of the road and wouldn't move until he got out. So, he got out, and she took off.
All in all, I felt better about myself, and I had helped someone have a better day than he was having. It really does feel good to help.

Yes, Stopping on the Highway is few and far between. I was traveling home about 200km from my house a month ago, and saw an old Dodge billowing steam from the enigne.
But of course I am on the other side of the Trans Canada, so I get to the next exit, about 10 minutes from where I first spotted them, turn around, and go back and stop. Turns out they cooked there engine *Ouch*
I drive one to get a truck, and continue on my way. I was the only one to stop, and I was on the other side of the medium, there must have been 50 cars pass them in the time it took me to get back, so People are in too big of a rush to car about other motorists it seems.

well do you know how to get the codes?... I don't have my book with me at the moment but it'll tell ya whats wrong or at least where to start. It will flash all codes 3 times. start with 1 2 then it will flash out the actual real codes. I have to fix dinner right now but I'll reply soon after I am done.
OK well I take it you know how to jump the prongs... but you had said 33/34 in another post and just if you happen to look here first its the MAP/MAF sensor. One 33 is MAP and 34 is MAF. So yeah your gonna hear the pinging of detonation.
THANKS, yeah I hear ping.
MAYBE I'LL JUST CHANGE TO A COLDER PLUG!!!!
I have so much going on that I couldn't count all the "bleeps!!"
I'm kinda leaving this until Saturday, then I can start to problem solve & think this thru.
NOW, can I rap on the connections?
DO I THEN HAVE TO CLEAR THE COMPUTER to see IF I got lucky?
I mean this is the second rebuilt MAF I've dealt with .
THIS IS BOGUS!!
I'm tired of throwing money into this BS, but, OH WHY NOT!
I'm gonna be chatting with my buddy at Kay Auto after I RAM THIS MAF up AUTOZONE A$$!
OR did I have to do something ELSE when I changed the modulor I just did on the freeway?
OR could the OLD modular I used throw this info into the computer?
I DO KNOW I have to fix the vacuum leak I found (the one by the distributor base) MUCH better. I read that can ASSIST in passing along a bad "check engine light", too. AND maybe these conditions.
I gotta read!
Thanks for the thoughts!

well you can jump a&b prongs. Now to find them they are the TOP RIGHT TWO PRONGS. There should be 2 levels of prongs. The top row, and the 2 RIGHT most prongs. This mission is being done on Saturday.
I get to drive it a bit more throwing this code. Gas milage is really poor, too.
Oh well, as long as I do not blow up the engine for right now, I'm happy it moves.
Driving on the freeway with the engine dying was not a fun feeling or moment at all! Being dumped in an area you have no ide where ya are, wasn't any better, either!
