92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

some of u guys know that i picked up a 3.4 at the boneyard a while back, and also picked up new pistons bearings rings cam etc etc etc

well this is what it was for i should be picking this up this comming weekend all dpeneds on when the guy towing it has time to tow it for me can do it

Has a 350/700R4 that have been rebuilt, aft. cam, shorty headers. Throttle body injection/305 heads. CAR RUNS AND DRIVES, but needs a 350 throtttle body and a tune or slap a carb on to run perfect. Has dash/console/front seats/carpet from a 98 camaro. Needs finish work on swap. Body is 95% straight but definitely needs paint. Stock open 10 bolt with 2.73 gears. Has SS style fiberglass hood and a 91-92 z28 spoiler, but car currently has factory 3 piece rs spoiler installed
the plan is to build an identical motor to my 3.1 with the exception of it being 3.4L instead of 3.1 and im also going to run a slightly larger cam
more then likley i will run a 278/272 duration grind in this motor heads intake and induction will be the same as the 3.1

the plan is to use a speedway motors tran adapter plate to mount a t56 behind the v6 motor
i still have some clutch issues to figure out but more then likley it will need a custom clutch disk
but the plan is to use a spec presure plate with a stock flywheel

and as always this will be run with a megasquirt unit

as far as the turbo the custom borg warner unit i have that was to go on my 3.0 will end up on the 3.4

it is basically a custom bw s475 unit except instead of being a t6 it is a hybrid t4 turbine side with a t6 compressor

Sweet! I like the different approach. If you were a little closer, I'd take a ride up to check it out!

What adapter are you using to mount the T-56 to your V6? I'm just curious...

What rear axle and gear ratio do you plan to use?

speedway motors has a trans adapter for the 60*v6 motors to adapt a standard 90* bellhousing v8 trans to the v6
i think the cost was 45 or 60 bucks its pretty damn cheap

im going to stick with the 10 bolt for now with a spool and c-clip eliminators as far as gear ratio i dont know yet that depends on what transmission i end up with

Have you been previously running our small ten bolts with real power and a standard shift transmission? I have not had such good luck in the past, I guess...

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

no but my 3.1 car runs the 10 bolt with a spool and c-clip elinator kit and even with the auto i can hit the tires hard enough to cut 1.7 60ft times on slicks and 1.82's on street tires

while the stick will be much more abusive ill just have to take it easy on launches i.e no side stepping the clutch @ 4,500 rpms on the line

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

You talking about this adapter:

http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Chevy-...ates,3280.html

That will put a T-56 behind a 60* V6? What about a TKO-500/600?

I only ask because I'd like to swap a turbocharged, built 3400 into my '68 Chevelle with a T-56 or TKO-500/600 behind it, someday.

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

u can get a tko for the v6 they will build u one witht he right input shaft , iirc the only diff between the v6/v8 manual trans is the spline count on the input shaft

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

Okay, but that would still leave the transmission on an angle, which would mean even more cutting on my Chevelle's transmission tunnel.

If that's the adapter, I'd just get one of the '68 Chevelle TKO-500/600 swap kits from Hurst Driveline

Oh, and sorry for threadjacking. My curiousity knows no bounds...LOL!

Will be watching this swap! Hope it doesn't blow up!

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

thats the adapter but u dont need it when using a v6 with t5 or tko trans u just use the v6 bellhousing
using that trans adapter with a v8 bellhousing will still put the trans at the tilted angle

now if the swap kit comes with a bellhousing that has the trans bolt patteren drilled to make it not at an angle im sure that will only come in the v8 configuration and then u will have to use the adapter plate

but i dont understand why u just cant cut the hole for the shifter using the stock bellhousing dosent the shifter end up vertical even though the trans is on a rotated angle ?

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

Yes, the shifter would still probably end up straight-up, but the reason I want the transmission to sit straight-up is because of the limitations of the trans tunnel in the '68 Chevelle. To get the TKO in there I'll have to cut out some of the trans tunnel, anyways. The newer RS500/600 might not require cutting...

The swap kit does come with a SBC V8 bellhousing, so that trans-adapter bolted up to a 3400 V6 and the TKO-500/600 or RS500/600 bolted to that would work fairly well, I think. The starter-pocket might be a concern, possibly...

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

No one has asked the obvious question...

Why did the PO leave BOTH spoilers on it??? LOL

Awesome starting point though you lucky bastard. Nice find. After the motor swap, pull one of those spoilers, finish up the body a little bit, and get it sprayed.

Will be one hell of a car

Re: 92 RS 350 to 3.4 Turbo swap

i havent picke dup the car yet pending what the body shop quotes me to fix my iroc.

i dont belive both wings are mounted think he just set the one up there for pictures

it is a good deal but i got an even better deal on my iroc and firebird i picked up both for 1,500 bucks and the guy towed them both the 360 miles down to my house it took him 2 trips one for each car, so basically i paid more for the tow then i did for the cars

the easy part will be bolting it up
speedway motors trans adapter, and a t56 swap kit crossmember etc

i think getting the clutch to work is going to be a lil pita, imnot to sure yet though. if everything works like i think it does then i should be able to use a custom clutch disk to fit the splines of the t56 but still fit the flywheel and presure plate for the v6

i dont even know how many splines a t56 input shaft has atm

It seems that most, if not all, of the GM T-56's have a 26-spline input shaft. As long as it is the 1-1/8" diameter 26-spline input-shaft, you should be able to use the stock clutch kit for a '93-'95 Camaro/Firebird with the 3.4L V6. Or, a stronger clutch based on the same specs.

wow that makes it a pretty direct bolt in then.
a spec stage 3 clutch is good to more then what a stock t56 can handle so

Seems like a CINCH...as long as it's 1-1/8" diameter. Which it probably is.

According to this, the input-shaft IS 1-1/8" in diameter. EASY!

lmfao, i was reading that article and thought that company sounded familiar. I went to the contact page and looked at the address. Sure enough, they are located right down the street from me. I suppose things just got a lot easier for me.
