so i got this car and it was VERY hard to start and ran...ok....i decided to put on a cold air intake it it ran REAL rough at idle and bucked and surged under acceleration with NO power. so i re hooked up all the stock intake and same problem. i reaplced the spark plugs and that seemed to help for a day. the plugs were oil fouled?? but anyways. It still is very hard to start. runs for a split second then dies. but i decided for a ray of sunshine and took it on the road yesterday. it was ofcourse hard to start and when i push on the gas i bucked real hard, but couldnt get out of its own way. fell on its face HARD. its loping at idea and all that crap. from what iv read it seems like a bad EGR, so i have on being delivered, wil be here in a few days. but i was just wondering if anyone else
has had this problem"

 

Check the fuel pressure, the test port is back near the dist. cap. The spec is 35-42 psi. And it should hold pressure after the engine is off, if it doesn't then the regulator might be bad or you could have leaky injectors.

got mine from no turning on to runs 110% good. check it out and see if you can find the problem in my thread. same engine as you so might be relevant

 

And don't just buy a bunch of stuff unless you know what you're replacing is bad. Bad egr is just one possible cause of a bad idle and running. Spend wisely.

well, not realy. when it tryed to turn over it start for a split second then dies or sputters, not running. but once it finaly starts up it stays running. just a sputtering idle and falls on its face hard under acceleration, and surges and bucks.

 

i see, if you wouldnt mind take a video of all this so we can see whats goin on and inside the engine, would give us a better view of whats going on, hopefully fasteddi will see it and he is good with our engines, he has the same one but his is atmtic.

STOPSTOPSTOP. lol oh she will turn over with plyers now, just neede to unhook and rehook the battery to reset the vats. BUT now the new problem, my son is taking his nap and allthough its only a v6 my garage is attached to the house and with the flow master shes a little loud. so when hes up in an hour or so ill take a video, that will give me enough time tofigure out to to post a video too..haha

ok lemme give ya a little background. so i bought this car from a kid who bought it from a used dealership. he got into a dront end collison on the first fricken day he had it. its been giving him trouble starting but he told me once it started up that it ran great. i finaly got it started when i got home. it did run well once i got it going. i put a cold air intake cone on it thinkin it would be cool and it ran like CRAAAAP after that. so i hooked all the orginal intake back up. only to find that 4 of the plugs got oil fouled for some reason, and it started smoking bad. i assumed i smoked the rings some how. so i got some ring fixer/stop smoke. and raplaced the plugs and it seemed to do the trick. now, the things the kid and his old man replaced trying to figure it out are: computer, fuelrail screen, air temp sensor, distributor, battery, plugs. from what i have read online a crapped out EGR can cause all of the symptoms that im having, so i have a new EGR comeing should be here in a bit. so thats a little history on the old girl. will be gettin a video of whats going on when my son wakes up. thanks guys

how much psi is shooting into the fuel rail? have you checked that??

 

is there a hillbilly way to check because i do not have a fuel presure guage lol.

 

lol, no man, the only way to ckeck would be to connect a gauge to the tester. ok hole on let me go record a video of my engine and the basics of it to show you how it is on mine, and then like that we will have a basic ground, brb.

here is my engine. as you can see mine started farely fast, no hesitation.

my probelm on slow starting was bad fuel injectors.

 

Oh my god...LOL This is awsome!! Ok can you get it running and let it warm up so that it idles lower?? Its gotta get 160 degrees or so for the idle to be nice and low.

Dont start buying stuff till you find the problem. Does the check engine light come on after a while of running??

Check the fuel pressure though if at all possible, you can rent/borrow a fuel pressure tester from autozone or places like that. You want 43.5 or so PSI at the rail when its off and when the cars running it will drop about 10 psi or so.

what i would do is just see if it throws codes out anyways by using a hair pin and put in in the acdl connection and see if it has some in store

 

The injectors could do that for sure. Back in the day my injectors went to crap one by one, and it would drive fine then all of the suddon it didnt..

Test that fuel pressure. Testing the fuel pressure will help you prove that the fuel pump is working right, that the fuel filter is ok, and that your injectors arnt leaking when the cars off or getting clogged up when you run the car.

Just take it a step at a time and in my opinion, id start at the fuel pressure first and confirm that it is ok, then if it is theres other areas to check.

 

You mean the ALDL connection? Should be easy to get to it with the stearing wheel off..

 

i tryed the hairpin earlier and the light didnt come on. i didnt have a very thick pin though..might have not got a good connection.

Just make sure it doesnt have any insulation on it and jam it in there carfully, you put it in the right pins??? And turn the key on After the paper clip is in there?

 

did the shift light come on and the fan??

it should be throwing out a code 12 if anything. what connections did u hook together to get the codes?

you should be connecting 6 and 5 together, this is what you mean by the right ones, correct?

some cars are pins 6-12 but mine is pins 5-6(newer ones) Greencamaros was 5-6 also. 3.1L

Its gonna be rich at idle when you first start it up exspecially when its cold. Let it warm up and then go stick your nose by the exhaust and if your eyes wana bleed then its still rich
