newly rebuilt engine won't crank
Got my engine and tranny back in the car.
Tried to crank it over and starter engages, sounds like it is struggling to move but engine is not moving.
I can turn the engine over by hand with a wrench by the crank bolt.
Any ideas what's up
Maybe starter not in properly........ did I need time shim it differently.
Thanks
Rhys

Re: newly rebuilt engine won't crank
The starter makes a grinding noise. The engine is not turning at all like it's siezed.
Maybe the starter is not in properly. Could I have put it in wrong ?
There was a dog leg shaped flat metal strip tab that I put between the starter and the block - is that the right place for it to go ?.

Hey
took the starter out to bench test. spins nicely and fast.
gear click out and back nice and fast.
just to make sure, does this plate go in between starter and block. looks like it does and the dirt spots match up.
gonna put it back in now I cleaned all connections

I used that shim or whatever it is also when I got a new starter.

I put the bolts in half way to see if it would crank and it did.
also did not have it grounded to the engine properly as I have lost the ground bolt.
battery was weak so jumped it. cranks fast and got it started. hooray.
Engine sounds tappy. Could it maybe have not pumped oil to the lifters?
