Okay I have a v6 2.8. No ac no smog pump. Routing The serpentine belt, am I doing this right? The belt is a dayco 5060825 from autozone but it is really close to the water pump. I lost a new belt this morning and just put a new one on. I don't want to lose another being they are 27 bucks each.
Your close , but to be routed 100% correctly you have to have the belt going over the idler pulley , which will have the effect of lifting the tensioner pully just enough to keep the belt from rubbing at the water pump .
Mine never had the idler pulley, it was routed exactly how yours is and I never had any issues with it rubbing on the water pump. I do agree with OrangeBird though, using the idler will put more tension on the belt, and lift it slightly more.
How did you lose a belt? You put a new one on and it came off while the engine was running? That would make me think either you didn't have it completely on all the pulleys, or you have a pulley that is loose or not lined up with the rest of them.
I had also wondered about the A/C , if the car was originally equipped with it and the compressor was removed without using non A/C power steering pump brackets , that could very well account for why the belt is rubbing . If the PS pump was higher as RBob said , and if the idler pulley was used like drdave88 and I think would help , it may just get the belt high enough to not rub .
