Reposted it here in case you didn't see it on the other one.
just basics. Others feel free to go into more detail.

--crowler, crane or ari cam -- By increasing the flow of gasoline and air into your cylinders you will gain hp

--roller rockers-- Creates less friction in the valve train of your car and create more hp. There are sever types you can get. Stock ate 1.52:1 while you can get 1.6:1.

--Ported and polished heads and intake. Smoothing out all the rough textures of the metal in the heads and air intake make the engine breath better.

--Headers that Camaro_hunter_d is making Flow the exhaust out of the car quicker. The faster the exhaust fumes leave the combustion chamber the better.

--Better exhaust (this should be the second upgrade, recommended by everyone.) This is jst obvious

--Forced induction Turbo, SC. Turbo runs off you exhaust, SC runs off you engines belts. What they do is the force into the engine.

(simular to how a leaf blower blows air out. )

-There there are all sorts of little mods that people do. K&N filter ram air setups, TB bypass, better ignition etc. There are other mods than can be found on the homepage. K&N flows more air, TB bypass makes the throttle body cooler, better ignition makes hotter and better spark to the engine.

First, let me send you to this link: http://www.howstuffworks.com Looks like they've added a ton of automotive stuff since I was last there.

Avoid a chip- they don't do much, except for drain your checking account of $70-$300. Save a chip for last, when you've run out of other mods. I ran an ADS chip for a while, I put back my stock one (because of other member's reports of the ADS chip doing nothing), and sure enough, I noticed no difference.

I'd also say to forget about a supercharger or turbo, at least for now. Nothing is made explicitly for our engines. They'll involve a ton of fabrication, and it'll be a lot of work. A v8 could be swapped in for less time & effort (and probably, less cash)- and they sell prepackaged supercharger kits for those.

Next- "while it's in the shop"??? Are you having a shop do this work?? Just curious- why?

ouch man, and I thought I knew nothing about cars oh well, we all gotta start somewhere. I am 20 and just started learning about all this stuff a few months ago. A lot of the guys on here have been working on cars since they were like 10.

All you need, for real, is the $15 Haynes 82-92 Camaro (or 82-92 Firebird) manual. I bought mine at Pep Boys, or you can get them thru http://www.haynes.com or http://www.jcwhitney.com (I think you have to call their phone #). It'll show you how to do it all. For a tuneup, you just need a $50 Craftsman (or $10 Walmart, but cheap tools break and then you have to buy replacement tools) socket set, a plastic $10 oil drain bucket, $30 wheel ramps (otherwise an oil change will be a bitch), and an oil filter wrench.

Tip for putting the car on wheel ramps- hang an old vanity mirror out of the driver's side window while you pull onto the ramps. This way, you know when to stop. It's better than relying on a friend to yell "stop"! (Usually by then it's too late)

Don't feel too bad. I once saw a guy trying to put lugnuts on backwards, someone else turning the lugwrench back and forth because he couldn't comprehend that it didn't work like a ratchet, and heard about another dude that couldn't figure out how to lower the floorjack, so when he asked someone else they said,"well if the jack goes up when you push down, try pushing up instead and maybe it'll go down." and he actually tried it.

When I was 5, my uncle was putting the wheel back on his car, and he told my father to get me away from the car cause I kept putting the lug nuts on backwards, well dad walked over and said which ones did I do... guess who had them on backwards lol.
