Max tire size with stock 16" rims

What is the max tire size you can put on a 1992 camaro rs with 16" rims. I tried searching but didn't find a definite answer .

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

The BFG 295/50R16 is the widest street 16" & a good fit for oue wheels & the car.

The next street tire width down is a 255 & made by lots of manufacturers.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

i've seen this size tire mounted before, and honestly i wouldn't drive on it. the sidewall is so bulged because it's too big for that narrow a rim. i would thing it would roll back and forth on the tire and be unstable.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

Did it on my 92 RS with stock wheels & a 8" rim falls within BFG recommended sizes for the 295/50 tire. The 50 series sidewall gives it the "Pro Street" looking bulge. I never once had a problem driving on them.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

wait i know we have done this link before! lol.
our stock height is 26 inches. i posted a chart here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/susp...-pick-out.html with tire heights compared to width. you should down load it for reference.
and here http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp is a tire size calculator.
and if you go here http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compar...=All&x=81&y=10 you can get a comparison of width as well as tread width and max size for your rims. go into specs and you will see the tire size and the max rim size as well as how much rubber is on the road.
i went to 275/60 15 in the rear and it was pushing it - rim size as minimum rim is 7 1/2 inches and im only 7, you are 8 inches and should be able to handle 275 with no problem - maybe even 295 - but i found that 255 was as big as i could go on the front. but others have gone bigger and done it with style.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

Are you wanting the width for the stickiness of a wider tire or the look of a wider tire?

excellent point - firestone 500 is not known holding the tire to the road as in punch it and to 150 as fast as you can. its just wider and the same goes for goodyear and bfg.

OH: I was automatically assuming the rears.

I ran 255s front/295s rear, on the 92 RS I posted above.

On my 17", I currently have 275s front/285s rear. But for a 16", there is no street tire, between 255 & 295. I wouldn't even try the 295s up front.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

thanks for all the replies , i was looking for wider tires to get more traction. I was looking at mt 295's and didnt know if they could fit. But i could always use the 255's, This is for a street car.

you talking about drag traction or cornering traction?

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

if its traction you want on the rear then firestone, bfg or goodyear is not your best bet, for cornering or drag racing.
there are much better tires for that.
the above 3 are just for street show and go, and the firestone puts a little more tread on the pavement than the other two for the same tire size, but not much.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

I'd look into some good DRs then. The 295 BFGs aren't a terribly sticky tire. I think they are 400 A B. I've heard alot of good things about the Nitto DRs as a combination street tire/ launch tire

All the stock 15" wheels are 7" wide.

If you want to keep the stock look but fit wider tires, you could consider having them widened to the inside, keeping them looking totally stock from the side of the car.

How about a "stock" 15" x 10"/11"/12" wheel?

Weldcraft Wheels

what would be more expensive having them widened or just buying new ones to put new tires . And just switch them out when i race.

Re: Max tire size with stock 16" rims

you will be ok with those but probably not for drag racing. i run 275/60 15 on stick rims and its a little bit of a bulge not a lot. i think it gives me about 9 inches of tread on the ground. you will have 11 inches of tread - that is 2 extra inches outisde of each side of the rim and 10 inches on the dirt.
but it is the correct height 26 inches. make sure your front tires are not taller than that - although that once was the style, back in the day.

Weldcraft wanted $200 per wheel, to widen my 17" x 9" ROH Snypers, up to 3" wider.

So it depends...Do you like the stock sleeper look (or want a certain wheel that doesn't come in the size you WANT) but have WIDE tires, or do you want custom wheels? $400 (if they charge the same for those stock wheels) vs 4 new custom wheels.

Weldcrafts charge may be higher or lower, depending on the wheel you want widened.

Well I rarely go to to the track , its for a d.d. but i do the occasional stoplight to stoplight. I love the look of a wide tire , but i want it mainly for traction. It will most definitely be taller than my front.

Thats an idea but i will probably stick with the stock wheel or go aftermarket. Thanks for all the help

The widest tire I would stick on a 16" x 8" wheel is a 245-50-16, stock size for the car. Anything bigger will just hang off the wheel and hurt handling and possibly compromise safety.

Hey, I have a 295/50-15 slapped on a 7 inch wide rim :P They do bulge out a lot but I've never had any problems with them. And I drive my car hard... Anyhow, I wouldn't suggest the street radials for a daily driver because unless you drive around with your tires at 15 psi on the street it wouldn't give you any real advantage as far as traction goes. They do look real good though.

thats good to know. i think i will end up running a 275. 295 seems a little extreme to me for a 7in. rim. I will keep the air pressure up until i get the weird urge to set my foot to the floor extremly fast

28" tall rear tires is a bit big. Read this thread to the end & you'll get what I mean.
