Are spacers bad?

I've read that putting a 2" spacer on the front is a bad idea for a few reasons.
1. Extra stress on ball joints.
2.bad for performance handling.
Any truth to these??
Thanks for any info guys

A spacer has nothing to do with 1 and 2. The thickness of the spacer is meaningless without knowing the backspacing on the wheel. If for example you put a wheel with 2" more backspacing with a 2" spacer but the same width as stock you would have the same thing as a stock wheel.

Agreed. May need to clarify what you mean by ".....2"more backspacing" than what? 0" backspacing? Will confuse some.

Re: Are spacers bad?

Let me reword that. If you had a 86 Camaro that was stock with stock rims. Then you take that same Camaro and put 2 inch spacers with Z06 rims would the extra force on the ball joints be a problem?
I appreciate the fast responses!

No, it has been done for years and no problems.

That is just for the front...the rear you may need some fender massaging or even more cutting. There are several threads that cover this operation.

Better check your local laws, NO spacers are road-legal in my state.

Seriously? Can you provide a link to A government site that mentions that? Did you know that many stock third gens rolled out of the factory with spacers installed on the rear?

Re: Are spacers bad?

I've been running 4th gen wheels for over a year now with 2" spacers and have not had any problems. I don't see a difference in handling either.

I've also heard that they are illegal in Utah but haven't looked it up. It sounds like typical government idiocy. Brake rotors/drums themselves are de-facto spacers, never mind the actual factory spacers that came on thirdgens and perhaps other cars.
In reality, between the myriad of federal, state, and local laws, you are likely breaking some law just sitting in your house. Forget about modifying your car in any way.
You just have to live your life and find ways around them at this point.
