Trying to find wheels that I like for my '86 IROC.
Hey all! Something that I did not think was going to be a problem, turned into one:
A couple of weeks ago I went and purchased a set of Stern "Mesh" wheels, size 19"X 8.5 front and 20"X 9.5 rear. Thought everything was going to be ok, but when I picked them up from discount tire, the front bores will not allow the wheel to go on the car. The rears fit perfectly. I have stock front and rear disc brakes (1-LE).
Now I am told that They (Discount) have not had any luck finding a set of staggered offset wheels to fit my car.
I have picky tastes and would like to find a set in 19" fronts and 20" rears that have a black center and a polished/machined or bright lip. I prefer the "Spoked" look.
anyone have any expertise in this area or can point me in the right direction? My tire sizes are 255/30/19 (Front) and 285/25/20 (Rear)
I would like not to spend more than $1,100 on these wheels, but if its close, I'm ok with that.
Thanks guys!
Jason.

You mean the bigger IROC wheels? I have the factory ones and I'm a little bored with them. Everyone has the 20" - 22" "IROC" wheels around here, especially on 5thgen cars. Don't get me wrong, I love the classic style of the IROC wheels, but it's time for a change.
Thanks for the input!

After much searching, I have come to the realization that I am going to just have to bite the bullet and buy some custom made Forgeline wheels. These can be seen on the "Bad penny" project 1stgen. It'll take a while to get them, but I'll post pics when I get them.

I have 18" hypermesh II, I had the front bores machined out to match, and installed aluminum hub centric rings.

Re: Trying to find wheels that I like for my '86 IROC.
The problem with running a spacer or adapter is that I have my tires serviced by Discount tire regularly and they will not work on any car using a spacer or adapter. They were talking about having the Stern wheels bored out, but didn't think the center cap would fit back on. Should have some answers tomorrow, hopefully.....

Johnny: What size/offset are you running, and what size tires.

Nooo lol
nice wheels and a hurt on the bank account lol would be a nice wheel make sure you do your research on any wheel you get tho
wow really ive never heard of that
i would find another wheel shop LOL.. as long as its a quality adapter from some place like http://www.motorsport-tech.com/.. and torque properly i dont see a issue on why tire shop wont work on them ?
you have pics of wheel ? depending on the situation then caps wheel still fit assuming hub doesnt stick out to much

As I said, the sterns require machining for thd front hubs, thr center caps will not work.

Re: Trying to find wheels that I like for my '86 IROC.
They say it is corporate policy not to work on cars with non factory adapters or spacers. Discount is the only place I really trust to work on my wheels/tires around here. Too many shady places that will not stand behind their product out here. At least with Discount I know if they scratch a wheel, they will take care of it. Plus, having the road hazard guarantee is a big thing for me, as I live on a dirt road where people are always dropping nails and bits of scrap metal, etc.
Thank you for the info, Johnny!
I want them to fit without rubbing. That car has an Eibach pro kit and a panhard bar with rod ends (With the drop bracket.), so at least centering the rear axle and having Zero side-to-side movement is possible.

Nice! Much better choice then the Sterns.
Those 19 and 20 sterns would be rediculous, my 18" sterns are 34lbs each!

that bad out there lol i feel you hard to find a good shop these days
Forgelines and dirt road 19/20s ? that would give me chills of even doing that with those $$$ wheels and thin tire combo
What width are you thinking for the front and rear ?
seems like a 17x9.5 would better suit you IMO or even 18s
with pro-kit you shouldnt have rubbing issues as compared too sportlines
prokit is only a 1" allaround lowered assuming your shocks are not worn out then the drop could be more than advertise
@34 lbs thats on the heavy side ..IIRC stockers where around 23ish depending on the wheel..must of really felt sluggish vs stockers

There are company's that can take your rear wheels and change any part of it.

Redrill lug holes ?
Machine shop to bore out center bore ?
or you mean using 2 piece wheels and changing out the wheel barrel or narrowing or widening them ?
If your talking about that then yes there are companys that do that or small shops

It's really not that bad of a dirt road. Just about 1/4 mile of dirt. Its a pretty good road unless it is raining (Does not rain too often in AZ), then its a 1/4 mile mud dragstrip. (I have 4x4's for that eventuality.)
I just want something that isn't common. The 19"/20" combo will give it that sort of "Pro-touring" look that I like.
I have KYB AGX's on all four corners With an adjustable panhard (Rod ends) rod with drop bracket. My entire suspension is new within the last 4 years (Which means it has less than 2,000 miles on it) Car has 53,000 miles and it had 50,000 when I bought it about 6 years ago. (No, I don't drive it much, but I'd like to drive it more...)
The stern wheels were heavy! I was surprised how heavy they were! Too bad they didn't fit the front...

Re: Trying to find wheels that I like for my '86 IROC.
That's an excellent choice in wheels. Forgeline makes nice stuff. I will caution you on the dirt road thing though. I have a set of high end 3 piece wheels myself and absolutely cringe when I have to go over dirt/gravel. This gets compounded when you run sticky tires. I run R compound tires and the dirt/gravel/sand that they pick up is mind boggling. I am always cleaning out sand/small gravel from the inner wheel hoop and I don't live on a dirt road. When you have over $4K into a set of wheels you tend not to want them to get scratch/scuffed dinged up...at least I dont. Just food for thought.

i have the same shocks havent got around installing them how you like them ? have you mess with the settings ?i miss that your from AZ the roads are pretty good out there last time i check or i could of been just the area i was in as compared to CA where they just patch the bad part then the other side gets jack up over the years , instead of a complete repave
yea dont get the heavy wheels thats really on the heavy side but if it just for looks then i guess its ok
