Cam selection for 357 w/vortec heads

Need recommendations at to what type cam use. The engine has 8.5 COmpression using 58cc heads. I have looked at LT4 Hot Cam and the ZZ4 cam. Need a cam that will break the 300+ rwhp. Also anything else that I may need to to do to the heads.

i would try to raise the compression.

i am a BIG fan of the hotcam, it makes great power, and is relativily computer friendly (it will need custom tuning)

If you want to run 12's then get the HOT cam. Very streetable too.

Wont a 357 with 58 cc heads have a higher compression ratio than 8.5?

So the vortec heads plus LT4 Hot cam would make a good addition to the 357 block? What would the compression be?

Depends on what pistons you are running. Also what 305 heads are you using? If they are from a TBI car than you are going to have a tough time of making any power reguardless of your cam choice.

The pistons are .040 speed pro hypereutectic and as far as the heads go, they are Vortec 350 L31 head with 062 casting.

Pick up some chevy high performance rags with vortec builds. Generally they pick cams right around .470/.480 lift with relativly mild duration and a low lsa which is what you want with vortecs because they make sick power under .400 lift. Nothing scary, but very streetable with good power.

I thought the 062 vortec heads had 64cc combustion chambers? Well anyway I would definetly reccomend the Lt4 hotcam if you have a roller block, but your gonna need new valve springs and I think you need the guides machined for any cam over .470 lift so I would have that done with that setup and good compression( you should definetly have more than 8:5:1 , probably at least 9:5:1) youll knock down an easy 350 hp with the right intake, throttle body, and tuning. Good Luck.

They are. I hope he realizes this. i think we all thought he was using 305 heads. His compression should be around 9.3:1.

I actually looked in jegs at the speed pro hypereutectic pistons and the ones I saw came in 2 different compression ratios for 64cc chambers for a 350: 11:8 and 10:6. I may be wrong though the jegs I am looking at is somewhat old. do you know the part # for the pistons you have 86z/92rs because its pretty important to know your compression ratio when you build your engine especially if you may be looking up in the 10:6 area.

if he is really at 10.6, he is going to need a cam that closes the intake later than the hotcam.
