dual snorkel air box swap

Ok, I have a question and I couldn't find the answer with the search. I want to do the dual snorkel intake swap on my 3.1 I recently won one on Ebay for $1 plus shipping (don't know what that'll be yet, probably more than it should be, just based on my good fortune), but the lower housing wasn't shown.

I see a lot of Ebay auctions for these things with the lower housing not shown, but I never see the housings up separately. Is the lower housing necessary? If the air filters snap into place, I guess I could see it being possible to set this up without having the lower housing, but I wanted to know if this was possible, or are these sellers just not providing all the necessary parts? It seems very common to just see the upper part, sometimes with the filters included, but only about 1/5 auctions have the lower housing.

Thanks

Yes, you need the lower housing. It is a two piece arraignment with the lower piece attached to the front cowling. The filters sit in the lower with teh upper clamped on top.

I posted a pic a few months back of the upper & lower piece together. Here is the thread:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...ght=air+intake

Bunch of pics in that thread. The post with the opening line of "Pic of the 2.8L MAF based Camaro setup." has the pic of the upper and lower housing together.

Funny thing is I found out just today that Year One sells those two pieces for $453 US dollars. I've never paid over $7.

453!!!!

That's why I have a hard time ordering from these places.... I know if I wait long enough or scope out the right Junkyard, I'll find the part I need for a fraction of what those places ask.

Yeah, I'm familiar with the setup, I just wanted to know if the lower housing was necessary, which you answered anyways.

One more question then, do the lower housings crack more often than the top or something? I just don't understand why there's so many dual snorkel's on Ebay without the housings, but I never see the housings up for auction. I guess they just don't know what they're looking for when they part out a car?

Oh, and I really really hate FRAM filters, but I'm not sure I want to fork out $50 for the K&N filters, is there a mid range filter? The point is, once I clean it up and get the paint fixed, I'm selling the car, so I don't want to put a ton of money into it, unless it's going to up the selling price (which is why I'm forking money out for paint, and some misc engine bay accessories).

Is there really a noticeable difference if you install the K&N filters? If so, it might be worth my money, otherwise I might want to pursue other options.

the performance difference is neglible. However, due to the fact that a K&N can be cleaned and reused, it may be a selling point.

two thoughts on the lower housing...

1. It is difficult to remove due to the fact that the front part is attatched to the bumper cover by plastic rivets.

2. maybe the sellers don't know what constitutes a complete airbox assembly.

Ok, I think I'm gonna go with STP filters. They cost the same as the FRAM ones at my local Murray's. I'm really starting to like that place.

I just want to be certain on this, everything looks straight forward, but it's good to be sure.... All I need is the upper and lower housing, and the 2 filters to do the swap, correct? It'll just mount to my existing hose inlet?

Thanks

You'll also need a filler piece that is the size and shape of a MAF. The rubber bellows won't reach the aircleaner outlet. I used a soup can with tape wrapped around the ends for a while.

wow. I hate to disrespect the soup can and all, but do you have any suggestions for something a bit more formal? Long term I mean? What fits good. Or did you pickup some PVC or something?

I installed 3" muffler pipe in mine. This summer I plan on taking out the flex hose and running a aluminum pipe all the way.

Yea, it was ugly, didn't even paint it.

What I now have is a piece of PVC. I can't remember the diameter but it is the heavy wall sch 40 stuff. I turned the ends down (lathe) to properly fit the air cleaner and bellows. Did a light sand blast to give it a matte finish and painted it in satin black.

Looks nice.

I also like Dales' idea of the piece of exhaust pipe. Again a light sand blast and some paint and it will look good.

The 91-92 TPI setups were speed density and had no MAF, did they come with longer hoses? Will this work instead of a filler piece?

KED, I'm gonna have to pass. For $75 plus shipping, I could buy brand new K&N filters, and get the whole setup at a junkyard for $20 and still come out $5 ahead.

Still never got an answer to that, did the V8 cars have longer hoses, or no? A TPI setup looks like the inlet sits a bit further forward in the car due to the length of the plenum, so this may not be the case.

Secondly I have another idea, anyone try just using two hoses together? 'course if this works out to be way too long I guess it could become constrictive.

I'm just looking for the most stock-looking setup. (by stock, I mean clean, I'm not a stock **** )

That rubber hose wont work, the mouth (opening) on the tpi is much larger space. I am unsure of the distance between the two.

I understand making it look clean like it was meant to be their, or this is how it was designed.
