did some wetsanding and bufing today

decided i didn;t like the way the hood looked on the car so i wetsanded again with 1500 and then buffed with sure finish. now my louvers look like crap all old and stuff so i found a new gm set on ebay to replace them. tires should be here this coming week so i can finally get it off the stands and see how it loks all together.

thanks

i'm near springfield....wet sanding is not hard just alot of elbow grease. even buffing is easy if you use a slow cut product. sure finish that i use is very fine so it allows me to go over and over without a worry of burning the paint.

sellmanb that area is black from the factory, so it will be black when i'm done, thats where the wipers and the grate for the air intake is. yes the engine bay is painted to match the car.

Do you know which cars were supposed to be black and which body color? Of all the cars at my house (87 GTA, 89 TTA, 87 TA, 91 TA Vert & 92 TA Vert) only the 87 TA has a black cowl, but the car itself if black. The only reason I mention it as not being body color is because it looks like smooth undercoating of some sort instead of regular paint like the other 4 got. Any idea???

Hi GMTech!
So, you own a 20th TTA too?
Great!
Are you on the TTA maillist? What name do you go by?
Just wondering if you know what your car number is, and what options and milage.
You have a nice collection going!

Another TTA owner,

George

Not to throw this topic off course, but I WISH I owned a TTA (know anybody selling one? ) Instead, I get my fix by helping Chris Lee (aka GMC-YA) get his "restored".
You can see his progress here:

hmm thats is interesting, my car is a norwood car and it is a black but it is like por 15 black real smooth. very interesting fact.

metalic i use a makita buffer with a 6" wool pad with sure finish compound its a liquid. i also have an orage pad that sure finish makes but it seems to put more scratch in the car than it takes out. i bought them both from the autobody store.com. they have some great deals on this type of stuff. i think the entire mikita package with bag two pads and buffer was like 180.00. it has a great varible speed and a slow ramp up start very easy to use and forgiving as you control the speed.

Jeff

Hi GMTech,
Sorry. I thought you owned the car!
It's always great to see people helping out others with their cars!
Hopefully it'll be on the road soon!

George, Yeah, I just said it was at my house. I tried to get him to come off it, but he wouldn't budge.

Jeff, yes, POR15 is a better description of what it looks like, and my car in question is a Norwood car. I'll have to look at the GTA and see if its a Van Nuys car since its also an '87 but has a red cowl.

-Just confirmed that the body colored cowl is a Van Nuys car.
So in theory, Norwood cars got black cowls and Van Nuys cars got body colored cowls. Hmmmm

Theory shot. My 85 (yellow) has a black cowl and is from Van Nuys. But under the black it is yellow.

And thats why it was just a theory. So who can figure out the real story behind black -vs- body colored cowls???

Possibility that some of the older Van Nuys cars had the black removed, on mine the yellow is peeking through in places. Maybe others had the same thing and used something to remove the black. It isn't on there very good, any harsh chemical would probably remove it.

Also may have been a year by year thing they did.

My 87 is from Van Nuys and it has the black cowl. It s a thin spray but appears to be a satin finish.
