Ok first off, I didnt know where to post this, but it is kinda thirdgen tech related. Im just curious if anyone has any ideas how to car top a canoe on a thirdgen. What should I tie it down to? In case anyone is wondering, there are foam blocks which go between the canoe and the car roof, so as not to scratch the paint. I'm currently building a 12' canoe (actually a pirogue) in my back yard, and it should be done by next week. I can give more details on the canoe if anyone wants. Heres a pic of what it looks like right now, im still fiberglassing the bottom to the sides. (all the tape is temporary :P )

i've done that a few times...i only live about 5 minutes from the lake where i put my canoe in so i dont have to go far...i just put the foam blocks as far to the edge as i can to give the canoe the most stability...i cant remember what i tied it down to though, i think on the back i tied it to one of those cut-outs in the frame and on the front i dont remember...as long as you have plenty of rope it should be fine...

The best way to mount it onto a thirdgen would be to call a friend with a pickup and put it in the bed.

I wouldnt risk putting anything on your roof, especially if you have T-Tops.

Come on guys, he's doing what he can with what he's got. I'm sure he cares enough about the car to not f it all up. Not all of us are fortunate enough to have more than one vehicle. I'm a mountain biker........ever tried stuffing a couple 26" mountain bikes in the back of a thirdgen t/a?

Well, I could always put a yoke (the bar going across the middle that you carry a canoe on your shoulders by) in the middle of the canoe and carry it to the lake (its just about 1/2 mile down the street), but I'd rather cartop it :P

How far are you going to take it. Just make sure you are able to have control of it putting it on and taking it off first. As for where to tie it down, a thought would be to tie it to where the seat mounts connect to the floor pan.

Why don't you remove both the back seat and the passenger seat.......

Lay in down in that area and angle it so it rests on the back support for the back seats.....

Then just open the hatch and place ALOT of blankets between the canoe and glass hatch....

I have no idea if it will work becuase of the size of the canoe, but it's the best idea i could come up with.....


I wouldn't carry that thing for 1/2 a mile either....

I don't think it would fit between the back seat and the headliner. Its about 15" tall, from the bottom to the tops of the sides. Not to mention its 12' long :P That would probably look worse than cartopping it... However, I'd rather do that or cartop it than install a trailer hitch....

Test it out, I believe there is more then 15 inches, that is the way i transported my rear bumper cover

umm.....not sure if it was said but you could take the t-tops out and tie it down to where the seats mount as said, there really is no way to get it to tie in teh front or the back, the rubber bumpers would get messed up....you could make the back work if you put some thing between the rope and the bumper but i can't see the front, maybe tie to something under the hood and have it come out the back...or you could buy my $200 beater 85 Nissan PU(see sig)

lol the sad thing is, in our owners manual it actually gives instructions for towing a trailer. i wonder if it says that in the 'vette manual too. that would just make me cry....

seriously though, if its only 1/2 mile away, just put that thing up on your shoulders and haul it yourself. ive done it before, my dad and i used to carry our canoe all over canada from lake to lake.

if all else fails and you have to put it up there, id at least take it to the local r*cer hangout and tell them you have a bigger spoiler than any of them. then challange them to a race and rape them with your canoe still on top

For strapping most normal items (canoes, ladders, bike racks, etc.) to vehicles, I like to use 1" nylon straps. Most strap sets have an adjuster of one sort or another and usually a hook on both ends. They won't rub on your paint like a rope will, and, with the buckle, you don't have to fidlle around with knots to get them tight.

If you have a hardtop, and plan on moving this canoe around a lot or over any kind of distances, I'd look in to the Thule or Yakima roof racks, which feature very nice boat cradles.


To all you Haters : We gotta make do with what we have at hand, which is why this winter saw a red Trans-Am plowing through the snow to the ski resort, ski rack and all.

Oh, yeah, I do know some 'Vette guys who trailer. Some Miata guys too; Although they usually pull a trailer that's only big enough for a toolbox, cooler and 4 racing slicks, if you catch my drift.

I happen to come across this thread. Did that canoe thing work ? I'm trying to come up with ways to move a kayak on my car. It should be easier since it's 11-ft long and weighs only 70 pounds.
