i have 92 z wheels and the shiny parts are all like crazed or cracked, is it the clear coat or the alumnum? or are the wheels even clearcoated? any ideas on this?? and also the center caps, anyone know a price for new or decent ones? do i even want to know, because i am sure theyre expensive.

The only place i have seen the center caps for Z28's is Yearone. And try $28.99 Each! and I'll go without center caps thanx!

Sounds like the clear coat is messed up. I have the same wheels and they don't shine like they used to. I looks like they are clear coated to me. I've been looking into replacing them for a long time, but like you said, you can buy really nice aftermarket wheels for the same price.

I should get paid for saying this, but try www.aaarims.com - they sell factory replacements in stock, chrome, polished, red, white and black - centercaps too! They even give you up to $700 dollars for your in trade as long as they aren't curbed or dinged. It's a good place for 4th gens too if you wanted those. Even the front wheels off of a C5 Corvette will fit whith spacers

Yeah, its the clear. Strip it and I would recommend polishing them. Try a search, someone had a REALLY AWESOME looking 91-92 Z28 rim polished.

I with Metalli on this one. There is no need to junk the ones you have and get new ones, just strip the clearcoat and do some polishing. It takes some work, but its well worth it. And it only costs about $40 to do it yourself, at least that is what it cost me. Do a search, polishing has been brought up numerous times. Trust me, you will appreciate your wheels alot more.

CG - I just finished polishing a set of the same rims earlier this
summer. Here are some pictures of them before and after, along
with the center caps. If you want the process I used do a search
on "polish" and look for my username, I know I wrote out a
detailed procedure in one of my posts. By the way in my opinion
they look even better on the car. I will be getting some new pics
as soon as I get the car back from the transmission shop.

This is what I started with. I purchased them used and the clear
was peeling and cloudy like you described. This was actually after
the clear was removed with stripper and they still look pretty bad.

Here is one after sanding and the first round of polishing.

These are after the second round of polishing and paint. I used
a self etching primer, charcoal metallic base (2 coats), and two
coats of clear. Sorry there are no pics of the wheel with the center
cap in place, but I included a pic of the center cap when it was
done.

Sorry for all the posts I don't know how to post multiple pics at
once. If I were you I would look into polishing the wheels you
have, and I'll be glad to answer any questions. I know I was
going to get some 17" wheels, but spent half the money on
these ones used and the supplies to complete them. I am
extremely happy with the results and find it even more gratifying
to be able to say I did the work on them myself .

Gunny Highway - I am not to sure how the polish holds up, since I
have only driven my car about 200 miles since they were mounted.
I just got done with an engine swap, and the car is at the
transmission shop getting the final tweeks to the freshly rebuilt
tranny. I think it should hold up fairly well because the little driving
I've done was in the rain and it has sat at the shop for
a couple of weeks and they are still shining. I am pretty obsessed
with keeping them clean anyway so they sould hold up pretty well.
If I have a problem I am going to order some Wheel Wax from
www.tirerack.com and apply some of that and see how it works.
