Something other than 6 X 9s in the sail panel
I know that this has been asked some before. I also know that the factory toyed with this idea. Would there be any sound advantage of changing from 6 X 9s in the sail panels to perhaps a 6 3/4 inch speaker? Would it be possible to put more than one speaker back in the sail panel. Maybe like a 6.5 and a 3.5? Any input you guys I have will be greatly appreciated.
Thank in advance...

sure its possible, but why? i have a pair of 6.5's back there but that is because i am a SQ guy and i just needed a little rear fill.
all you have to do it make a template out of wood and cut the the size speaker holes that you want.
good luck.

i have 6.5" coax in my sails. no benefit to putting in multiple sets in there. 3.5" speakers arent really good for anything anyway (trust me, i drove a taurus for a while. 3.5"=crap )

you can put whatever you want back there, even an 8" woofer/sub will fit (won't sound great, but would fit).
just remove the steel panels that hold the 6x9s (4 screws, but you might have to take the plastic interior part off to get to them), then get a similar piece of sheet stock steel or aluminum from home depot or lowe's, drill holes, cut a speaker hole, and put it in. a dremel with one of the metal cutting tips (either the discs or the 1/16" thick one that looks like a tiny circular saw) works well.

I put 5-1/4's and tweeters in my sail panels and I found a great material to use instead of wood-- masonite. you can get sheets (or half-sheets) of the stuff at Home Depot and it's cheap, sturdy, easy to cut, and is thin enough that it can screw right into the location of the 6x9 and the cloth speaker cover will still fit over it.

must refrane from cutting up counter top in kitchen. no seriously, i am suprised it took people this long to use it because you can get it in al sorts of different patterns and thickness and strength. it is almost as good as mdf in my opinion, and if the masonite was had a layer of fiberglass over it, then the sound should surpass the mdf. jmo.
thanks

the ONLY thing i would think of putting back there would be a set of sub/midbass drivers.
i'd do a couple of 8" subs in the panels, but it's going to be a pain in the *** to get any kind of 'glass work done in that area.

if you wanted to use 8" subs as sub bass, you would need to put some form of an enclosure inside the sail panel. if you can think of a better way than fiberglass, you're one step ahead.

They are not finished yet. They still need to be sanded smooth and will be painted gloss black

I still have to finish the outside of it as well as put in a divider inside it to keep the 6.5 and the 8 in different chambers so they won't hurt each other.
