shorty heddman headers hitting starter

I bought a pair of heddman 68478 (i cant remembet the other non-coated number) and they are hitting the silinoide on the starter. Now it is a gen 1 350 with the stock starter for that model and year pickup the motor came out of. Im just wondering if its a problem with the headers or if i need to my a mini-torque starter to clear it.

Yep, Mine hit too. You will need to buy a mini starter or clearance the collector, I did the later and ground down the solenoid ear on the starter. Those headers are to be used with the newer style starter. I found out the hard way also.

Re: shorty heddman headers hitting starter

I had the Hedman headers on my '91, along with the y-pipe that went with them, they hit the starter, the y-pipe hit the floor pan, and all in all the fit was horrible, even after "massaging" the whole thing for a while.

My hooker headers fit so much better, All I did was threw the headers and y-pipe in, and they don't rub or hit anything.

Put a hi-torque mini starter in, you will be happy with that mod all around.

Or you can use the original 158 tooth flexplate and starter that the headers are meant for.

Re: shorty heddman headers hitting starter

I had this set up on an 87 with a 350 and a mini starter and had no clearance issues (the y-pipe was welded for this car if that makes a difference). I recently moved both headers and y-pipe to an 85 IROC with a 305 and stock starter and had no clearance issues (y-pipe was not cut and re-welded). No floor pan, oil pan, k-member or frame contact on either car. The 87 also had sub-frame connectors welded in and had no contact issues there. Both cars had 158 tooth flywheels.

Re: shorty heddman headers hitting starter

Thanks for all the responces. I was goining to by a hi-toque mini anyways (they work so much better from my experiance) but im having trouble finding one that has the off-set bolt pattern( 72 chevy block.....the one hole isn't threaded and i dont have the equipment to do same) so is there a product or type that i should look at that isnt realitively expensive (mini's ain't cheap as is but a less expensive brand)?

Re: shorty heddman headers hitting starter

I had a whole thing written out about how to drill and tap the hole you need (I had to do it on my block), but the forum kicked me off. If you want to do that, just let me know. It's pretty straight forward.

Alternatively you could try this : http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CSI-100SBP. I had one in my hands before I decided to just drill and tap the block. It seems like it would work, but I never mounted it to see. On that product, IMO you are paying for the spacer block, the starter is just a typical starter as far as those things go.

I had the same problem with my headers when you get the mini starter just make sure you get one that is adjustable and you can get the solenoid away from the headers I ended up burning up my solenoid

With the offset starter I assume you have a 168 tooth flexplate.

Just go to your favorite parts store and get a starter for a 1996 chevy 1500 2wd with a 350.

Its small Hugh torque, offset bolt pattern, and will have a warrenty!
