No '86 IROC's with the auto option came with 3.23's. In '86 IROC auto's had either 2.73 or (if equiped with the "G92" RPO) 3.42. Out of the 49 something thousand produced there were 50 350 equiped...

See, thats the confusing part. When you follow the diagram in there, both wires end up at the battery positive. I know one has to be a sensing wire for the regulator and the other should be supplying...

If it was a wiring issue then it should have shorted upon start up. If you were able to hear it run I'm guessing it took a little bit to burn up, so the exhaust possibility is more likely.
