It is matte black farm implement paint made by Majik. I found it at the local farm yard and it is some tough stuff is you use the hardener with it. I used my Harbor Freight 43430 HVLP gun at 40 psi....

As long as you wire brush and wipe the surface down with a degreaser, the farm implement paint would be the best way to go in my opinion. Make sure you use the hardener and reducer. It makes a night...

You can find mdf sheets at Home Depot, Menard's, Lowe's, etc. You don't really need 3/4" mdf for rings like these. 1/2" maybe even 1/4" should be enough.
