Hood insulation removal??

Gents - my hood insulation looks terrible, contemplating ditching it. Car has perfect paint on the hood - will removal of this ugly blanket ruin the paint? Paint is not original.

A buddy and I replaced the timing chain and cover a few years back on my 89 LB9 5speed. The new Mr. Gasket chrome cover didnt' have the timing tab with it hence, I cannot check the timing...
