How fast will 1.6 lifters damage the valve guides?

How fast will 1.6 lifters damage the valve guides?

As opposed to the original 1.5s.

I'm not sure, but if the 1.6's are designed for the engine, it shouldn't make any difference to the valve guides.

The valves will be opened farther in the same amount of time at a given RPM, therefore will be moving faster. That means a higher rate of wear, particularly from the side load that is imparted as the rocker rubs across the stem tip.

So, put roller tip 1.6 rockers on, and you've basically eliminated the side load. Such rockers will actually allow your guides to last longer than the factory 1.5's.

I do not think 1.6 rockers will damage or wear out valve guides.

I think improper valvetrain geometry from not using correct length pushrods when changing cams and/or rocker will cause more damage or wear.

That's why you must ALWAYS check for valvetrain clearances to avoid these problems.

If the 1.6:1 rockers are equipped with roller tips, the lateral forces on the valve stems and guides should no longer be am issue. As 57 indicated, the valves will be opening a little farther than before, so unless they are clean in that area they may accellerate wear at the seals and upper end of the guides, and will certainly be travelling 6% more than they did before through the same length of guide.

Putting it all together, the reduced wear from the rollers and increased wear from the additional travel makes the whole thing a wash. If you're concerned about wear, compensate by changing to synthetic engine oil.

Actually it's 1.6 Rocker, not lifter. I've never heard of a 1.6 lifter for an SBC.
