I got a full gasket set for christmas. I just thought i would share the tear down and install the engine only has 61,471 miles on it.I am installing these gaskets because i blew a head gasket and had a bunch of oil leaks. Here is the progress so far. let me know if there is anything i should watch for while disassembleing this or any tricks to make things easier.

Re: L69

Are you planning on doing any other Mod ?.. CAM, Head Porting, intake ?

If you have it that far down.. I would suggest replacing the CAM, Springs, Lifter, push rods and maybe the rockers (roller rockers are great).

Keep us posted on the progress..

Re: L69

My first car i bought on my 16th birthday was just like that. As for any tricks, just keep track of all your bolts and parts don't loose anything. If you come across a parts car for very cheap or free and you have room try to get it. Good luck with the car.

Re: L69

Now is a good time to change the O2 sensor - its a bitch when that manifold is back in the car. Get an NTK or GM unit - not Bosch.

Re: L69

nows a great time to replace the valve seals. not too pricey ,well worth the money and time. be sure to check distributor gear for wear too.also be sure and take an air hose and blow out all the holes that the head bolts go in (debris, water ,coolant, grease),all will keep you from getting true torque on the head bolts upon reinstallation.oh, check oil return holes in block and heads.replace thermostat.now is the easiest time to do all this,if i think of anything else ill post again. if i can be of any help ,just ask,i have a 17 yr. old son who is learning too.89 2.8 rs camaro.we also have an 83 s-10 350 father-son project we play with, later jimmy

Re: L69

Yeah i just replaced the valve seals and then we decided to tear it apart so we got a full gasket set and now im gonna replace them again beacuse they came in the kit. I think by the time we are done it is going to turn out to be a pretty good car. For being only 16 I am lucky to have such an awsome car

Re: L69

Well as long as your replacing the Valve seal and having the heads that far apart, I would at lease lap the valve seats.. port match the Gaskets on the intake side, polish the bowls and clean up the ports. Not much cost involved with any of these except maybe the cost of a die grinder (or something) and some grinding/polishing wheels.

Re: L69

Stock valvesprings should go in the trash while you have them off. After even 65,000 miles they are trash. 1.6:1 roller rockers would be a nice addition as the cam is decent in the L69 already.

Re: L69

With an engine that has that low of miles blowing a head gasket already, my first priority would be to take the heads to an honest machine shop to have them checked out. At the very least, they need to be checked with a straight edge to make sure they're not warped, and inspected for any cracks. Upgrades won't do you any good on a warped or cracked head!
