Brain Teaser

Here is a racing question for you:

Car 1: Stock 1978 Ford Granada with a 250 straight 6.

Car 2: Stock 1962-63 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x2 with a 283 and 4:11 gears.

Scenario: Road race from point A to point B. Can take multiple routes. Total distance is about 4 miles. You cannot take a straight line.

Who would win. I say the Granada as it will be able to top out at a faster speed than the truck. My buddy says the truck as the acceleration will far outway the lack of top end.

Here is a map showing point A and point B with possible routes.

What do you all think?

This isn't through a neighborhood or anything is it? Acceleration plays a big part when there are more than one stop and start (i.e. turns). I guess it depends on the distance between the direction changes.

This is out in the country.

Nothing to do with a third gen.

Problem is I was having this argument with the truck owner about 18 years ago. It started in the house, the race that is...we got so hot with each other we tore out of the house, jumped in the vehicles and both tried to get out of the driveway at the same time (in reverse no less).

Problem with the driveway, though, is that is was more like a two track, quite long and went around another building. Let's not mention the locomotive engine sitting next to it.

First off, we learned quickly that 2 vehicles cannot occupy the same space at the same time. After throwing all the scattered vehicle parts in the back of his truck (this was a friends house and we would have been killed for leaving a mess...not to mention crashing into each other).

He managed to get out in front of me and toof the first left. I continued straight but got hung up behind slower traffic. I took the second left. I come flying around the next right right on his butt, after that I couldn't get an opportunity to pass him and ended up pulling in to his house rubbing bumpers.

Although we laugh about it all the time, the argument never was settled.

If the grenada chooses a good path, it should win that one. Just choose the straitest path. And, in all honesty, the 283 probably has barely more HP than the inline anyway.

Oh come on now, I own a third gen. This is just a theoretical question that has been in my mind for almost 2 decades. I'm too old now to try and recreate it, plus you just can't get away with what you used to.

Hey guys, I remember once in 4th grade I was having an argument with my friend about who would win in a fight, Batman or Aquaman. We got all made and chased each other until we ran into each other and got broken noses. We had to run home before the recess lady found out and never finished the conversation. Who do you think would win? I'm thinking Batman.

id go this way but if he took the other way he would probally get to x before you but u will say be going 50+MPH already when u pass it and he will be at say 20 when he takes the turn and you have the top end so u should fly by him alittle past that intersection of X

I agree...if the darn Schafer's bread truck hadn't got in the way (at 45 mph), I would have had him.

The deal here is that this question has been in my head for a long time. I truly felt that some younger insight would be beneficial.

Once again I am reminded of the fact that this site includes far too many young kids that think they are just the "cat's meow".

I do not want to offend the truly intelligent people here, but the other 80%...well I think you can figure it out.

Call me a "troll" if you want, but this is yet another example of a simple question turned into a free-for-all.

It is no wonder the major manufacturers no longer browse this site.

80% is pretty unforgiving. A few trolls out of more than 30,000 members is hardly what I would call a problem. In my opinion, stu isn't even one of them, despite his occassional off-topic post like this one.

FWIW, it was a free-for-all to begin with, since you assumed you can ask a non-thirdgen related question here on TGO. Many people appreciate that this site is a great source of information and feel the need to ask questions that are not relevant, but please, everyone, practice some restraint.

Illinois is not that far from me. Would you like to set up a race?

Set the price...I think 1k should do it, let me know if that is too much (I do recall you calling me arrogant...to which we both apologized for).

Another simple question resulting in ignorance...

I truly try not to be a jerk. It is that when I ask a question, it is meant to be thought provoking...and it could pertain to any car.

Try to think out of the box, because most people only believe what they read in a magazine or see on a TV show.

This stereotypical set of responses is irritating...no thought involved. The scenario I set up could very well pertain to a V6 with economy gear setup against a 350 "built to the hilt" with a 4.11 gear type of situation.

I am a third gen owner, yet this situation could very well happen to any of us.

It was also meant to be amusing.

You know, I did once apologize for calling you arrogant, but I must say, that apology is hereby withdrawn. Stu didnt even make a bad comment to you. You just chose to jump on his ***.

I dont really know what your problem is, but you obviously think that you are better than everyone else. Why, I dont know. I have a lot less respect for you than anyone else on these boards, and as a matter of fact, I would rather see stu here than you. (not an insult stu, I swear)

Why would you even offer to race me? Did I ask to race? Did I say something about your car? NO! So shut the **** up d1cksmack. My car isnt the fastest one here. Not by any means. Of course, with the way you brag, I can only assume 2 things. You have no friends or girlfriend. After all, who can stand to be around such an *******.

Come on to Illinois if you want, we like guys like you. I'm sure you can squeel like a pig real nice.

EVERYONE!!!! WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LONESTARS CAR AND A PORCUPINE????

A PORCUPINE HAS ITS ****** ON THE OUTSIDE!!!!!!!!!

Have a nice day!
