Question: 1986 5.0 TPI...do I have a IAC, and where is it?

I read that replacing the IAC is a good idea as part of a tune-up. I have a Haynes manual, and it does not seem to have anything on the "IAC" valve. Can you guys tell me if I have one? If so, where is it, etc??? THANKS!!!!

compnine isnt going to tell you if the car has an IAC valve or not and if you had no idea where it was, not sure you'd ever find it on there.

Yes, it has one. No, it does not need to be replaced as a tune up part. Wherever you read that, I'd take any other advice with grains of salt. It only needs to be replaced if it is damaged or does not work anymore. The most it would ever need is to be cleaned, but unless something is wrong I would not mess with it.

The IAC is a round part with a 4 wire connector on the passenger side and bottom of the throttle body.

compnine.com will show you a location of everything that the car has... or most of it... looking at the blown up diagram then looking at the listing and whala, you will see that it does have an IAC...

.. I think it's #17... you can't argue though that it ain't a good tool to familiarize yourself with components that relate to your engine, well unless it has been hacked by the emissions fairys....

Took more time than it was worth, and does not have that part name listed either.

The picture above shows exactly what you're looking for. I forget what size the hex is, its about 1 5/16" or so.

You guys rock. Thank you for the posts. So, is the consensus that this is NOT a valve that should be replaced?

You only need to replace it if its not working. Even then you can usually clean it and make it work right again. Though if you do end up needing to replace it, you'll find it a simple enough thing to do.

Only reason you should replace it is if you're having rough idle or stalling when starting the car. Can usually clean it with some carb cleaner and it'll be fine plus its a real pain to get out I had to use channel locks to remove mine it was stuck closed and just quit working on me. If you're not having these problems I wouldn't mess with it unless you just want to take it out and clean it just get a new seal if you do.
